I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm looking for some advice on how to handle this situation. My boyfriend has been struggling financially and has been renting out his personal vehicle on Turo to generate extra income. From what I know, he’s been making around $8,000 per year in gross income after Turo takes its fees.

I had always assumed he was reporting this income on his tax returns, but he recently told me he never reported it. He’s not too worried because he thinks the chances of being audited are slim. I’m not sure I agree.

Being the worrier that I am, I immediately assumed this is probably a bigger deal than he thinks. I’m concerned that, since he has been doing this for multiple tax years, it could be considered tax evasion. I realize the amounts aren't substantial, but I don’t know enough about income tax to make any assumptions.

My initial suggestion was for him to file amended tax returns for the years he didn’t include this income to correct the issue, but he’s worried about the financial impact. I can cover the amounts that would be owed, but I’m concerned about what might happen down the road if the IRS ever audits him and he hasn’t filed amended returns. Turo obviously has his SSN and is reporting this.

I’d appreciate any additional insights on the best way to resolve this.
