Atlanta was the biggest battle of the war, imo, since Lincoln seemed doomed to lose the 1864 election before the Union took Atlanta. As Sherman was closing in on the city, Hood attacked his supply lines and assumed that would cause him to retreat. Instead Sherman went around the western side of Atlanta and captured the last railroad supplying it. Once that happened, Hood just packed his bags and abandoned the city without a fight.
The same thing happened at Richmond. Lee had defended the city brilliantly for the entire war, yet once the railroad supplying it was captured, he just abandoned the city.
