I had a friend who told me that her younger brother died of cancer when he was 9 and she was 13 and her parents took her to a Rabbi for grief counseling and he told her that her brother's death was all part of G-d's plan. She told the Rabbi to pound sand and that she didn't believe any of that and never looked back.

twist: fast forward many years when I met this person she was a YUGE IDF supporter.

Yikes re: IDF 😬😬

I'll tell you that of all the God-believers I know as adults, most are male... and I associate with way more women than men.

If I had to explain it by painting broad strokes, I'd say that men are more stubborn and less likely to admit to themselves when they've made a mistake. Women are constantly reevaluating their beliefs. So they're more likely to break out of religious brainwashing.

What if I was never a believer does that make me stubborn for never reevaluating the possibility of God?

The thread is about "realiz[ing] god doesn't exist" so that's irrelevant to the topic at hand. And believing in God is irrational IMO, so it's mostly just schizophrenics who go from disbelieving to believing... at least as adults. No opinion on why someone would erroneously (IMO) start believing as a kid.

I only brought it up because you made assertions about the gender divide. Imo I have not seen any correlation between gender and religiosity. Seems just as likely to occur or not occur in men as women. Maybe it manifests differently but I think the frequency is about equal.

Yes, I'm just saying that your question about reevaluating your beliefs in the opposite direction of "realiz[ing] god doesn't exist" is outside the scope of my theory.

It was a commentary on your assertion of male stubbornness vs female constant reevaluation. I didn't know you meant it to only go in one direction. Females more likely to reevaluate than males, but only towards the position you believe in? If this were true, and perhaps it is, is it not the case that we would see more females trending in both directions or jumping back and forth between believing and non believing?

Again, it's asymmetrical because believing in God is irrational. And I don't have an opinion on who changes their mind in the wrong (IMO) direction besides schizos.

You would think that but some do read Cioran, or at least claim to, and vlog on YouTube about how Life is Fundamentally Meaningless. I never even knew these women existed until I was an old man on the Internet.

women only do something after they've seen men doing it 1000 times.

that's literally all women's behavior is. an imitation of men.

women sort of follow along 100 miles behind men, letting men take risks and have original experiences, then they timidly mimic things they've seen men do and go 'Rawr! Women can 'do things' to!'

I had my edgy "there is no god, I'm so smart" phase like many others. I think it's generally tied to a dumb view of God to begin with. I've always found the "if there's a god, why do bad things happen to good people?" question to be sort of dumb and small minded. I can understand how it pulls at people, but it seems like the wrong lens through which to view God.

Dismissing “why do bad things happen to good people” so blithely is as superficial as a snarky Redditor cherry-picking issues with religion. Theodicy has been a legitimate issue with belief as long as there has been belief.

the real question is "why does it matter if there's a God". just because there's a God doesn't mean that is somehow a GOOD thing. if anything, it makes things even worse.
