On its own is passable, so it is "underrated" but only because of the comparison to S1. But you can't say that's unfair when it's a new season from the same show.

Season 1 - 9.8/10. One of the best seasons of TV ever.
Season 2 - 2/10. This season has great actors, but the plot is completely unintelligible. This Slate pieces is one of the funniest pieces of writing ever because the author took the time to try and write out the plot and how it insanely involved knowing deep back stories of characters who never appeared on screen. https://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/08/03/true_detective_season_two_a_guide_to_the_plot_of_this_confusing_season.html
Season 3 - 7.5/10. This season does not have any of the extreme highs of Season 1, but it is a very competent detective show. I thought that Steven Dorff would get a lot more work after this (he outshined Mahershala Ali) but it didn't do anything for hi.
Season 4 - 4/10. This season arguably has the best pilot - with the creepiest environment and most interesting mystery. Unfortunately, the rest of the show just sucks, the quirky mystery parts have no payoffs, the acting is bad, the character choices make no sense, and the mystery resolution is laughable and filled with 400 obvious plot holes. |
