From today (July 7, 2026), the EU's General Safety Regulation requires all new passenger cars and vans to include Advanced Driver Distraction Warning systems. These use interior cameras to monitor eyes, head position and face movements to detect distraction or drowsiness and issue warnings.
The regulation was adopted in Nov 2019 by the European Parliament and Council through normal EU legislative procedures involving elected representatives. No direct public referendum.
