so, if you were born in a serbian-speaking village in austria-hungary, you would be part of the serbian orthodox church. this church's older/more formal liturgical texts would mostly be in old church slavonic, while more day-to-day stuff would be in serbian.
the notion of an english-speaking eastern orthodox church is kind of silly at its core. it's a synthetic construct rather than an actual rooted institution, aside from any theology. that's why it seems kind of 'off' or fake in the modern american context. |

if you didn't grow up in one of those churches, speaking a local eastern european or balkan language, you will never really be an eastern orthodox. that's not an 'identity' you can simply 'choose.' it's a process and an outcome, and if you're arriving at that stuff as an adult, you already missed it.
americans in particular don't like these facts, since it contradicts their generalized consumerist/individualist views of society. |
