it really doesn't help anyone except companies wanting to delay bad news and hide performance numbers under thicker layers of reporting. nobody is going to be able to cut fat from their fp&a or accounting departments because of this and on the investor side people still have their jobs to do, just with less data. i haven't been following but i wouldn't be surprised if there is so much inertia around the quarterly norm that both sides will suggest keeping status quo. if nothing else the trading community will complain and they have an audience in lutnick and bessent.

Relatedly, a lot of the numbers, reports, and press releases are fraudlies and flame, including what goes into quarterly reports. But, at least (a) the quarterly reports must come out on a regular, fairly frequent basis and (b) there is some backstop (SEC enforcement) to the level of fraudlies and flame therein. Doing away with quarterly reports will increase the levels of fraudlies and flame. Of course, SEC enforcement is down, too.

too narrow a view to evaluate this as “how many bean counters can we fire”

dysfunctional orgs will fritter any time gains away and do a bunch of dumb shit in the scramble to hit numbers at the end of the reporting cycle, no different than quarterly reporting. could see worse outcomes there from procrastination/internal friction as a 6 month hill is higher to climb vs 3 months. probably a macro good thing if it leads to incompetents being exposed and removed more often

efficient orgs on down to places w decent leadership but iffy operational execution may be able to dedicate some extra attention to longer term projects vs number chasing for reporting purposes, which imo would definitely be a good thing at the macro productivity over financialization level

It will reduce the flow of information to just the important investors, like in the private markets. This information asymmetry will lead to continued widening of the gap between the haves and the have-nots.

it's fine. i expect almost all serious companies will continue to report quarterly due to market expectations so it wont have any significant impact
