My dad wasn't drafted, but my uncle was. In HS he was quite the athlete and ladies man. He came back from Vietnam and moved to somewhere in rural alaska in a cabin. He never married or had kids. I never even met him.
One day he walked way out into some tidal flats during a low tide and just waited for the tide to come in. They tried to rescue him, but I guess it's like quicksand and he died as the tide rose. My dad still chokes up when he talks about my Uncle Bill. My dad, on the other hand, spent the Vietnam years banging all the women in our midwestern town and he said they were the greatest years of his life. |
