That's not efficacy. It's a margin over another flu shot.
Real numbers: 2.0% got sick vs 2.8%. You'd vaccinate 137 people to prevent one case.
And for adults 65+ — 68-87% of all flu deaths — FDA didn't approve it on efficacy at all.
The 26.6% “more effective” claim for Moderna’s new mRNA flu shot came from a trial that used a standard-dose (low-dose) egg-based flu vaccine as the comparator. They chose the lowest bar possible for a comparator, and the FDA was fine with that. Absolute rates were just 2.0% vs 2.8%. NIH inventors are eligible to receive royalties (capped at $150k/year) when government-owned patents they helped develop are licensed to companies. |
