Prior to Descartes it was common for "esoteric" traditions to be "discussed" in plain sight alongside other more conventional debates. I mean look at this:

This was baked into everything. Johannes Kepler was, more than anything else, an astrologer. He was observing the stars for that reason
Descartes was the first to wipe all of that off the map. He had to due to political pressure in his lifetime. He gave birth to an intellectually STERILE environment where esoteric traditions were either mocked or, following Descartes' example, thoroughly ignored.
