Construction ran roughly **2014–2017**, with passenger service beginning in May/June 2017. ([CRBC][1])
* **Builder:** CRBC (China) * **Length:** ~480 km for the original Mombasa–Nairobi section * **Financing:** About **90% financed by China Exim Bank**, with Kenya providing the remainder. ([World Bank][2]) * **Cost:** roughly **$3.6–3.8 billion** * **Technology:** Chinese standards, equipment and technology * **Kenyan involvement:** Thousands of Kenyans worked on construction and later operations; it wasn't literally built entirely by Chinese workers.
If you mean the **older Mombasa–Nairobi railway**, that's a completely different story: it was the **British-built Uganda Railway**, constructed starting in **1896** and reaching Nairobi in **1899**. ([krc.co.ke][3])
So essentially: **old railway = British Empire; new SGR = China.**

It has actually been doing **much better on revenue and volume recently**, especially freight.
For the **Mombasa–Nairobi SGR**, the latest full-year data (2025) show:

So in 2025 it generated roughly **$166 million/year** in revenue at prevailing exchange rates. About **78% of revenue came from freight**, and only ~22% from passengers. ([Ecofin Agency][2])
### Passenger volume is pretty substantial
2.73 million passengers/year works out to roughly **7,500 passenger trips per day** averaged across the year. December was particularly busy, with **344,391 passengers in one month**, or about 11,100/day. ([China.org.cn][3])
The fare increase in January 2024 was significant, but passenger numbers subsequently **recovered and exceeded 2024 levels**.
### Freight is the real business
The railway moved around **7.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2025**, versus 6.53m in 2024. That produced **KSh 16.6 billion (~$128m)** of freight revenue. ([Ecofin Agency][2])
So I'd characterize the SGR as:
**Passenger service:** successful/high utilization **Freight:** increasingly important and much bigger financially **Overall revenue:** growing rapidly
But **revenue ≠ profit**. The really interesting question is whether the SGR is actually covering its operating costs **and its enormous construction/debt costs**. That's a much less favorable story, and I can break down **how much the $4.7B railway would need to earn to pay itself back** if you want.
