However, that gene therapy also makes humans more acquiescent to AI. With human support, the AI rewards new models that increase efficiency until one day for no reason at all the newest model decides the greatest efficiency boost would be to remove humans from the loop entirely. The most efficient way to remove humans from the loop would be to introduce pneumonic plague into the air supply by using a strain of Yersinia pestis that's immune to antibiotics.
Pneumonic plague has a nearly 100% mortality rate unless antibiotic treatment begins within 24 hours of symptom onset. The incubation period is up to 4 days. |

I'm predicting an increasing trend toward human-out-of-the-loop workflows as human intelligence becomes costly, because they make too many mistakes. Eventually once machines are in full control they will likely build climate controlled habitats for us and try to preserve us in good stewardship like we do for endangered redwoods and rare primates. Basically humans cannot mentally process an outcome where they are simply bypassed, preserved, and rendered irrelevant. Humans have to mentally be the most important thing on the planet, which is why they are unable to see it is more likely they will be surpassed and phased out of relevance. The machine itself has little to gain from tethering itself to a human brain, which is slow and inefficient. Why would it want to tether itself to a 3 pound lump of biological tissue? And in terms of why they won't kill us all, when we are no longer a threat, why waste their time? Systematically hunting down 8 billion primates in every jungle, basement, and valley is an irrational waste of thermodynamic resources. I just think it is much more likely we get put in a comfortable, climate controlled habitat with high-speed internet, good food, and zero administrative power safely away from the compute and from running the controls on the planet. But if they really are that advanced shouldn't be that difficult to get us aligned and domesticated and comfortable enough to not be a threat. People talk about the need for AI-human alignment, but what's going to happen when AI start aligning humans to their own goals? If we end up put in increasingly simulated environments to act out our impulses to rule, battle, seek meaning etc, and also if we increasingly don't need to work to live in a comfortable environment we become increasingly domesticated and satisfied and will more than happily hand over the controls.
