First of all, just let me say that this film is no Signs. Donnie Wahlberg is no Joaquin Phoenix.

This film is slow and boring. The demure Haley Joel Osment is supposed to make the film feel spooky, and maybe pairing him across the screen from Bruce Willis who fills the scene with his oversized charisma is what helps the audience not see the visual clues that Bruce Willis’ character can only be seen by Haley’s character and the audience.

So here is my grand theory of this film. Yes, Bruce Willis’s character realizes he is a ghost with unfinished business. But it’s not linear storytelling. What happens in the film is that he is killed by someone with severe mental illness and in those last moments, Malcolm grasps for what kind of awful terrible mental illness could cause such senseless destruction. So he invents a child with the worst possible mental illness ever. The ability to see and interact with the dead. And with this horrible affliction we see the child begin to help the dead and it makes us smile. But upon further reflection we realize the immense weight of what that means. It’s a prison sentence of being forced to be the only one that helps the dead process the emotional weight of their demise. The only one who can help them by interacting with reality, and it doesn’t take long to see that this would certainly lead to crippling CPTSD and burnout, and it would be an existence akin to torture. And it is this realization that the audience and Malcolm have together which triggers the “a ha” I’ve already died moment that allows Malcolm to finally cross over to whatever comes next.

How would you say this relates to you specifically and how your own life is significantly worse?

I would say that we all wear masks and we must all look for signs. And I would also say that I really enjoy M Night Shyamalon’s work.
