But if they don't politically collapse, then you have to defeat them militarily (i.e. beat them so that they can no longer resist or retaliate to the point the political leadership collapses or surrenders). Trump took a gamble that they could hit them hard and decisively enough that they would politically collapse/give in. That initial gamble didn't work so now there's effectively a boat race where Trump is betting on the US+Israel can degrade the Iranian state faster than Iran can blow up the global economy.
