They brought rap to white suburban kids at which point it fused with mainstream culture. Jay-Z was really late to the party. He was sort of the last guy on the ship of OG 90s rappers. But then he took the lion's share of the credit for it. Credit to him for being a business genius but he never had the artistic talent. He wasn't actually the guy who was there at the beginning who made rap huge. He just clung on at the end. Also his stuff was always sanitized by comparison. He took gangsta rap and made it clean. Always looking to profit off someone else like Linkin Park collab. He just saw people as dollar signs. No clue how anyone bought his shtick.
