how does America have such a weird sounding name in the Korean language?

In Japanese it's amerika but during WWII they reverted back to old school names and Japs used to call it beikoku (米国 ) but if you use the On reading it's mikoku, so probably relates back to Korean migug and Chinese meiguo, just a phonetic approximation.
A more fun language comparison is the Chinese reading for the Japanese "rakuten" and the Korean "lotte". These are two companies that operate in China but have the exact same hanzi and exact same reading, so I wonder how they differentiate. |

I saw this with a Korean parts manufacturer that wrote its name in English as "Delkor," but when you write it in Korean script it's "del-ko," the same as Delco.
