maybe 30% of coastal biglaw associates have a dedicated office with a door and it's vanishingly rare at a F500. offices in government, most academia, and other institutions like healthcare, or nonprofits are hilariously terrible at all levels and the higher up 'closed spaces' are no prize. office space is practically reviled in tech except for niche workers who actually need it, which is like 5%.
believing that a private office space is some big flex in 2025 or since 2005 strongly suggests this person has limited contact with the professional world or lives in grand island, nebraska where you get your PRIVATE OFFITH after two years of salesman status at the state farm walk-in next to baskin robbins.

i have been WFH since 2018. here's how my life has changed as a result:
i shower once a week (used to do so every day). i just wash my hair every day and shave so i look presentable on camera
i've worn a button up shirt maybe 15-20 times since 2018. haven't worn dressy pants or dress shoes once
i rarely buy new clothes and wear most things until they get holes/tears/etc.
i moved to a cheaper neighborhood to save on rent
haven't owned a car since 2011, haven't had to buy one yet mostly due to WFH
my employer does not track a thing i do on my work computer so i regularly take 2+ hour lunch breaks
on top of the long lunch breaks, i run errands in between meetings rather than before or after work unless i'm unusually busy
sold all my expensive watches
saved a lot more money than i would've if i had to work in an office
haven't met a single coworker in person in over 5 years
there's more, but i can't think of them at the moment

This is why I’m so confused. If you are married being out at work isn’t about working or sitting at screens. In your mid to late 30s you should no longer be looking at screens unless it involves your bank account. You should be talking and meeting people.
But back to my point “work” is where you spend two extra hours getting home where your time is unaccounted for and your wife doesn’t know where you are so you can handle your “side businesses.”
WFH you can’t disappear for hours upon hours.

You're talking and meeting people as you look at screens on your Webex or Meet or Teams or whatever. It doesn't matter whether you're at home or in an office.
So the story here is that all of you guys that love the office just love being away from home? That is pretty depressing.

I'm a fairly senior in-house lawyer at a megacorp. Everyone here all the way to the EVPs/CEOs are looking at screens all day. But I'm curious at what you do that doesn't involve looking at screens. Whenever I'm meeting with outside counsel, most work involves screens (we need an opinion on X - here are the key bullet points, here's our feedback on y that you drafted, etc.).

When we're meeting with outside counsel we're often pulling up docs to discuss. We don't just chit chat with you guys for the fun of it.
Similarly, "managing work" generally involves some sort of work product that is sitting on a screen. I suppose if you're 80 you can request that they bring print outs and manually mark them up but that isn't a material difference and I haven't seen anyone do that in well over a decade.

As in an employment law lawyer or an employee of the company? Yes to the latter, obviously, no to the former.
A bunch of senior execs WFH all the time here. You know who can't WFH? The janitor. If your job involves presentations, docs, etc. then you can WFH all the time.
IIRC, you're a law firm partner. Wtf do you do that you can't do from home?
