This was a Fortune 500 company. I left to go to Biglaw but the whole thing was eye opening for me. |

But even prior to that it was volunteer work in high school that made me realize how many black kids had single moms and how insanely neglected they were. My high school ran this summer camp and the kids were basically milder versions of the kids from S4 of The Wire. None of them had dads and the moms were all on welfare and gross, what little we saw of them because most days these kids just wandered off into their projects when the bus dropped them off. All the same stuff about how Wednesday was their happiest day and Monday and Friday they were basket cases. Kids would show up every day and tell me they hadn’t eaten since lunch the day before. TLDR, the idea was that women were interchangeable with men and an all-male military academy could integrate women without losing any important aspects of the experience, in practice, they had to nuke the school from orbit and start over or risk having to close the school.
Also, the physical difference between the average male and the average female, when tasked with similar physical tasks, is crazy. You don't realize how rarely men and women are asked to do similar physical tasks - as school, seeing it, it was crazy, like a top 5% female was basically the same as a bottom 5% men, even on things like distance running. |
