Job sucks and is stressful

Also, for many being a lawyer was not their first pick for a career. Many probably had dreams about this or that that they gave up on and are still bitter about it.

Law manages to be both boring and incredibly stressful at the same time.

The work is rote and mind numbing. Drafting and reading very dense, very boring documents.

You need to pay attention to detail ALL THE TIME. That detail appears in the world's most boring documents. If you missed one point in one of the 50 cases you researched, you get shit on. If you didn't change one clause in a 60 page contract, you get shit on.

You have to argue all the time. Everyone you encounter is trying to outmaneuver you or prove something.

You spend all day dealing with other people's problems. All you do is make other people's problems your problems. This is not just true in litigation.

This and don't forget:

If you manage not to fuck up, or even do something well, you get a minor head nod best case. Worst case you get asked why the rest of your work isn't this good.

Because you work your ass off in a boring stressful job that requires antidepressant use and your wife only fucks you with resentment.

What makes someone a hard worker? The work is boring and my wife does resent me in any event.

chicken or egg problem, but i recall a study by the american psychological association that showed out of like 100 different grad programs, law was the only one where pessimists outperformed optimists. i say chicken or egg because as noted above a lot of people end up in law school despite having some dream that they were too risk averse to follow, or, alternatively, being so pessimistic that they never had a dream to begin with. unlike all other grad programs, hardly anyone is actually interested in going to law school. and then law school develops that further by teaching us to always look out for issues and risks. so you're taking already pessimistic, risk averse people and then amping up those traits in a pressure cooker, then turning them loose into 60+ hour work weeks dealing with problems involving millions of dollars and people's lives. pretty shitty situation!
