People were happy in the 1990s. Now they’re not. What year did it switch?

I think I noticed a lot of people starting to complain around 2015 but I don’t remember the exact timeline and I’d like to get the bort’s thoughts

circa 2012, we were halfway through obama and it was clear the rapture was not going to happen and shit was still just going to hell, we all recognize on some level that we are living in a decaying empire, most people probably can't articulate it but they have a sense that tracks very well with what, historically, is almost certainly happening to us right now and the fucking retards we put in charge think they are too smart for bad things to happen to them

I suspect the societal misery has more to do with social media being in our faces 24/7 (apps, notifications, constant “breaking news”) and no longer something you just do on the computer for a couple hours a day

Yes. McCain was the clearly superior choice; however the nation was caught up in hypnosis/psychosis of 'transformative change' (aka I want to say I voted for the first black president) after the sort of drudgery of the Bush II era, that Obama coasted to a win. It was a storm of naive Millennials voting with the Leftist Boomer Radicals solidifying their Long March into the institutions.

IIRC, we knew before Obama was elected he launched his political career in Bill Ayers's living room. I guess it was a lesson in 'you get what you vote for'.

This is the obvious answer.

Screens / social media has had the biggest effect on our happiness ever.

WFH is a great example of this. Almost everyone prefers WFH, but it's also pretty clearly awful for your mental health.

It's easier t owatch something on Netflix than to go to the movie theater. It's better to get food delivered to your porch and eat it on your couch that to go to a restaurant. Everyone prefers to text their friends than call them. You meet people on dating apps instead of going out to bars.

All these little improvements in our life have made us miserable.

Is this a serious Q?

Everyone posts fake pictures of themselves having fun and then looks at everyone else's pictures and wonders why their own lives aren't like this.

What you're describing is happening to you is happening to everyone.

So much of life's problems go away if you WFH.

I didn't realize they let fucking retards sign up for this site. WFH is amazing. I did it so many years before retiring, and I'd wake up late, work from bed, go to a cafe, chat people up there while casually working, if i had a meeting i'd head back home to call, but basically i was just chilling, playing with my kids, fucking my wife, never having to drive a car, working out in the middle of the day, and going to bed early and getting 8+ hours of sleep every night.

how has nobody said 2008

during the 9/11 aftermath and iraq it was all just disappointment and an almost quaint mocking frustration with american leadership as a pastime, mostly about things that were a distant reality for 95% of the population.

2008 was the first time we saw real anger. and we never turned back. if we had a republican president libs would have gotten violent. obama being president kept them merely demoralized.

Only someone who wasn't an adult in 2003–04 would say this. There was legit fury over the invasion of Iraq. I was at uni at the time, and we blocked the roads and the city sent vehicles to run us over. Basically it was an ur-MAGA moment where crazy people thought they could commit vehicular murder on behalf of the gov't employer.

Tipping point IMO was around 2014 or 2015 when the smartphone reached mass proliferation. It's not the 24/7 social media feed so much as the fact that the smartphone removed all of the so-called "friction" from life.

But what tech frauds call "friction" is actually the texture of life.

You see ads for products or services that promise to "take care of X so you can go back to doing what you love." But now there is a smartphone-based service for everything that used to just be part of living a normal life. And all that people seem to love doing is endlessly scrolling. But not because they actually love it, rather it's because the smartphone has removed so much of actual life from the world. And what remains is but a husk.

It doesn't mean a person can't be happy, but it requires a meaningfully concerted effort to replicate a more analogue life.

As it is, I'm not sure my net worth won't be entirely wiped out in ten years from social upheaval, the collapse of America, etc. Like it or not, even a globally diversified portfolio is fucked if the largest consumer breaks out into civil war. Global depression for a generation, no?

I think 2017ish or so was the point of no return when the entirety of women’s collective unconscious was fully blown out by Tinder and IG. Women have always been capable of nastiness etc etc but there was so many good traits balancing out the other end. Your average person today just has so few redeeming qualities and their high powered perceptions are laser focused on the faults & inadequacies in others.

It’s obvious evil is in full control of this realm and automation will not be done kindly, but needfully. haha

2012 seemed significant in real time. Combo of Trayvon Martin and the election where Obama got to run as a populist/anti-rich candidate despite having pussed out on going after anyone post-ITE and having a cabinet handpicked by Wall Street, and Romney playing into it completely with the 47% audio left the country feeling like the total neolib victory was complete, racial and identity politics were a perfect tool to divide and distract and any hope that the Reagan coalition corpcon/christcon alliance could reassert itself and potentially restrain the neolib sellout of the heartland was lost. Things obviously got angrier post summer 2015 but 2012 seemed to be what set it all in motion.

Obama was an obvious fraud running an “eat the rich” campaign message as a desperation pivot in the wake him getting his ass kicked in the 2010 midterms and public outcry and backlash to rumored austerity plans that he was entertaining in order to get a deal out of Simpsons-Bowles. Occupy Wall Street starts in the summer of 2011 just as his negotiations with Boehner fall apart and its becoming clear that the GOP nominee will be a private equity CEO and centamillionaire. So the Obama campaign decided to pretty blatantly lean into class war messaging and tried to co-opt OWS. Romney was already well suited to it, but the leaked audio of him addressing a room full of rich donors effectively saying that the poorer half of the country were lesser Americans who don’t have a stake in the government working well was about as perfect a piece of oppo as any campaign has ever been gifted.

its the phones.

hard to say exactly 07-12 when they became ubiquitous, and of course "phones" can be kids on tablets or employment on desktops. so theres nuance, sure, but within a handful of years mankind converted its existence to virtual

been long enough since the matrix movie that its kind of goofy and stale to still talk about, but we really did that shit, we really chose a matrix existence - and only since most of us were in law school

but its as remarkable, and more sudden, than almost any other development in our species - so there is no understating it. ITS THE PHONES

It all starts and ends with the phones. The phones led to complete and total information proliferation - at speed - which hollowed out countless industries. Completely wrecked the fabric of life and turned people into constantly agitated dopamine slaves (in large part because they have nothing else to do with their time, it's all hollowed out.)

If internet access only existed on a stationary computer, humanity would legitimately be saved (even if fraud stock valuations would come down.)

as others have mentioned, proliferation of cell phones around 2014 started a downward spiral for individual, internalized misery

but i think it was around 2020 when people looked up and got a peek behind the curtain and realized it was fraud and lies all the way down. american institutions were hollow, our leaders were utterly corrupt and incompetent, and the nefarious ((actors)) we had thought might possibly be in charge were far more powerful, and far more evil, than we ever realized. we were lied to constantly for decades. it's hard to accept that American brainwashing was just as cunning and heavy-handed as the regimes we were taught to despise for doing the same.

ITT: bros who need to read some history. Griping about Obama and Trump when your ancestors lived under actual kings, many of whom were profoundly inbred to the point of retardation and deformity, but who nevertheless possessed arbitrary authority to torture and execute opponents, and most of the populace supported this system because it seemed safer than the alternative of being raped and enslaved by the next king over or even further immiserated by proto-Commies. Oh no I can’t stop poasting on my phone and my stocks went down, all is lost!

Having an insane and inbred King would basically be irrelevant to the average prole hundreds of years ago. If anything the average person would be closer to nature and have no idea what a "culture war" or tranny was.

I remember reading something, maybe it was on XO, that the average person in the pre-industrial period would take in less information in their entire lifetime than can be found in the average daily edition of the NY Times today. Ignorance is bliss.

Material conditions of proles were godawful. Short lifespan, constantly ill, teeth falling out, sharing a tiny house with huge family and farming barely enough land to support same. The fact that they were also completely lacking in knowledge of anything better does not eliminate the objective shittiness.
