cr
just did some work for a nice retirement place - ai/automation integration. $250k upfront and monthly fee is the base entry point. insane waiting lists

Cr. Wife and I checked out one of these in our area. $270K is the cheapest possible buy in for a small one BR apartment ($410K if you want to get 80% it back when you die) plus $5.5K/month with no care. If you need care, the price goes up depending upon how much care you need. Triple the buy in and add 50% to the monthly for a place we might actually want to live in. Monthly charges are raised annually. They will take some number of Medicaid patients in the skilled nursing facility part. Long wait lists (years)for the nicer units.
The cheapest way to spend your golden years is probably in an assisted living group home. I got my sister into one of these. It did not take Medicaid. 10 years ago it was $3K/month for a private room in a large house in an upscale tract neighborhood. Full time staff and meals included. Assisted living in a facility with a private apartment is probably $6-15K depending upon the area and niceness.
Wife and I are trying to figure out what to do if we fail to drop dead on schedule.
Wife's sister has dementia and is a facility where almost everyone is on Medicaid. It's actually not bad physically, but there are no activities. Her husband takes her out almost every day. Otherwise she would sit and stare at the wall.

This happened to both of my 90 year old grandparents the past few years before they passed away. It’s a horror show. We visited often but they are still on their own over there and once they can’t physically leave for family gatherings and stuff it’s just awful.

this is most depressing shit on multiple levels that you'll ever watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMDsUdhymbQ
we're supposed to die at home from the flu that we caught from our grandkids, or from some stupid infection that gets into our blood stream, or from cancer that we didn't notice until the very end. modern medicine and the medical industrial complex have completely perverted our relationship with death. i know everyone voluntarily signs up for all this shit, but you can't expect the average person to say no. it's incredibly abusive and wasteful and inhumane and no one can stop it.

these people should all be dead long before they ever reach the "nursing home" stage
it totally sucks for them and i feel emotionally sorry for them, but none of these people should exist. you're supposed to die when you get old, not become an invalid and an anchor for the young and healthy and virile and productive. this is really a moral issue that everyone should be concerned with. one of the reasons why the western world is deteriorating so badly is because old people have so much disproportional power and influence and will not just fucking get out of the way and die like they're supposed to
modern technology keeping people alive as the walking dead in order to make more monopoly money off them is truly grotesque in so many ways

i wouldn't have them do anything. the fear of death is too strong; people will succumb to it, and there's no helping it
one can speculate that maybe a different society, a different culture, a different people might prepare themselves better for the terror at the end, but that's fantasy
we'll all continue to suffer horribly for years before we finally die

it's not "vain" or "decadent" to not want to die
people in the past had different understandings of and relationships to death because of their environments and circumstances
this is one of the most complex and difficult topics and questions that exists for human beings. it's not simple at all

Someone told me the goal of fitness as a middle aged and older person is to have a high quality of life as long as possible which will allow you to die relatively quickly when you do get terminally ill. Or just to die of a heart attack or stroke randomly.
One grandparent I had died like this, another one was well on their way until they got into an accident (caused by an illegal) and then spent the next 5 or so years in agonizing pain becoming crippled.
I've also seen some crazy shit...like an old guy I knew who lived across the hall from me was basically all alone, and slowly dying of stomach cancer. I think his wife had died or he was a lifelong bachelor maybe.
Towards the end he fell a couple times and I could hear him calling for help. I got the fire department to help him...I remember vividly once in his piss smelling apartment (he kept the door unlocked). It was crazy. Just huge stacks of pill bottles in buckets of KFC everywhere on top of random clutter.
I think as you get older and if you don't have people in your life taking care of you or a strong community it makes a lot of sense to sell off/donate possessions you don't need or use...because eventually the hoarder instinct takes over or you simply cant keep track of the stuff you have.
Also from what I've noticed, even if you do every single thing right health wise, as a man after the age of 90 your body starts to completely fail you. I'd consider myself lucky if I had the same health I have now and just dropped dead on my 91st birthday.

i just realized that if reasonably intelligent poasters in this sad, cynical, nihilistic corner of the internet think that my view on this is unreasonable, my friends and family must be completely shocked by it. life is so shitty, just withering away day after miserable day waiting for it all to end. the longer it takes the worse it gets. and yet nearly everyone wants to keep going no matter what. it's so pathetic. but like my dad told me recently "your (extremely frugal, calm, rational, and christian) grandpa did it, you'll do it, too." i used to be terrified of dying in a plane crash; now i pray for it. my uncle died on his couch at 53 from an aneurysm. lucky bastard!

PE Really Sucks but that other guy is right, it's not a significant factor in the real estate situation in the US
Housing costs in the US suck because of mass immigration, demographics rendering many otherwise desirable spaces uninhabitable, the civil rights act, and extreme supply scarcity in desirable areas
All of the nons have to be removed, simple as. The housing situation will only get worse otherwise

One night as I was leaving from visiting my sister in her assisted living place, a little old lady named Judy, who was bedridden and constantly curled in the fetal position whispered from her room, "Hey, come here." "Hi, Judy, what can I do for you?" I asked. "Call me a taxi," she said. I inquired, "Where are you going?" "Vegas," she said.
