Craziest part about a decision like this is that it is made entirely because we don't have an exact proportionate distribution of races and ethnicities across these programs (and other upper strata segments of society.)
So libs would rather punish smart kids from all backgrounds, including the races and ethnicities they purport to help, because seeing too many white and asian kids in gifted programs relative to brown and black kids makes them mad at reality.
I am starting to think that the actual solution to this is to just forego school altogether. Like what is the actual point. If you have a smart kid but don't have the funds to go private, your kid will now be saddled with 85 IQ troublemakers in their classes that disrupt everything and force every kid to move at a slower pace.
But again, what is even the point. Oh wow my kid goes to school so he can graduate one day and go to a good college and then get a good job to send his kid to school so he can graduate and go to a good college...and on and on and on. All to effectively secure a spot in the professional world where you look at screens all day.

Unless you are 50+, you can always make some changes (even incrementally.)
I encourage as many people as possible to work independently at least for some portion of their life. Assuming they can handle the responsibility that comes with it. The world would change dramatically IMO if a larger share of the population worked for themselves, if only because it would help more people understand the unbelievable tax burden we all face.
Note I do not mean as Uber drivers or whatever BS serf work. Nor do I just mean "go do shitlaw," there are a lot of roles that can be done independently.
If that isn't possible, I recommend people try to get into roles where they really "feel" the impact of their work (through meaningfully variable comp, as one example) Not just "oops I missed a comma so I need to stay late to fix it."
Increasingly I think "the professions" (law, consulting, finance, medicine) will become much worse within institutions, but much more amenable to people who can work effectively on their own. The more that technology eats at these jobs, the more performative they will become (inside institutions.)

he's pushing it to 3rd grade rather than kindergarten.
i don't think this is the end of the world. a lot of countries focus on play rather than academic learning until age 7 or so. i do think you can bore extremely gifted (top 0.01%) kids this way but perhaps they can skip K or 1st grade if they need to.

It’s ok not to know how the system in New York City works.
These “reforms” are only popular with childless libs, a decent number of which went to private elemenary school (like Hizzoner!)
My kid went to a school where the majority of the zone students were in a housing project. They had two full classes of g and t kids and two classes of projects kids. The school would literally be half empty without them.
NOTE: a lot of the projects kids with parents who have a fuck were attending charter schools like success academy which is also on the lib shit list but g and t stuff is lower hanging fruit

Early School (6–9 yrs): High Stability & Predictability
This is the "sweet spot" for initial reliable testing. By age 7, correlations with adult IQ jump significantly ($r = 0.70$ or higher).
The "Stability" vs. "Change" Paradox
It is important to distinguish between absolute and relative scores:
Relative IQ: This is your rank compared to peers. If you are in the 90th percentile at age 11, you will very likely be in the 90th percentile at age 80. This is what we mean when we say IQ is "stable."

I think 99% of this bort was in gifted and talented, so good point
That said, anyone sending their kid to public school instead of private school deserves this outcome
Public school is not a place for smart kids

No he isn’t lol. Libs don’t like that the program is white/azn.
SOURCE: they also hate the high school entrance exam for the same reason except they can’t get rid of that because it’s state law.
Anyway, this is just daily mail slop recycling news from October so I’m curious if it actually happens. Diblasio twiddled his thumbs on it for 7 years because it’s only really popular with activists and as I noted above eliminating the programs are more complicated than some childless shitlennial snapping their fingers.

People commenting ITT seem to have no recent experience with NYC public schools.
They got rid of the test for admission because it's RAYCISS. Now it's based on a teacher referral (which they give to any white or asian parent who asks) and a lottery entry. Then, when you get in, it's the same curriculum as public school, just one year ahead. That's it. Yes, there are better teachers and fewer troublemakers disrupting class, but it's not a crazy difference. The schools accept kids from all 5 boroughs and (except the one on the LES) all are located within buildings that house other schools. So there are still some LeTraviuses wandering around your kid's building.
This is totally different from the magnet high schools.
