Reminder: that was you being trained for consumerism. Completely ridiculous to tell 8-year-olds to bring their allowance to buy books. And they always set it up in the cafeteria or gym because they wouldn’t want to accidentally remind you that there were thousands of books you could just read for free in the library.

Yes. Loved it. In third grade I bought three Garfield books and when I brought them home my mom was super pissed. The next year she found out when my class was going to the “fair” and showed up in person to “help” for a bit so she could monitor my purchases.

My older brother got hold of a dirty joke book when I was in 4th or 5th grade and we read them to each other over and over and over. Good times.

To be clear, yes, my kids did just wrangle $100 out of me and came home with scented highlighters, so I’m silently fuming.

Very fond memories. Pick up the latest Goosebumps and those scary stories to tell in the Dark books with the nightmare inducing illustrations

Fuck I forgot all about the book fairs. Man so many good childhood memories that you don't even "remember" unless someone prompts you to evoke them

The book fair was a lot of fun, and of all the consumerism to rail against, buying books is low on the list, especially on a board of scholars. However, the book fair now sells a ton of stuff other than books, like cheaply made plastic tools and sparkly pens, which I get annoyed about my kids buying in lieu of books.

Damn this makes me sad because I was one of the poor kids and I think I got a free voucher worth like $0.25 cents and I bought couple of erasers with it. This was in the early 90s.

I imagine it costs 3x as much now but it'd be great to give my kids allowance and let them go HOG WILD buying Dav Pilkey slop

The great new scam at my kids bookfairs is they wnt you to create a "Digital Wallet" where you preload the money on them and then they get a QR code.

I bet you can guess what happens to the "change" if there's money left over.
