I just spoke to President Trump, and we agree — the relationship between the United States and China has never been better. Following President Trump’s historic meeting with Chairman Xi in South Korea, I had an equally positive meeting with my counterpart, China’s Minister of National Defense Admiral Dong Jun in Malaysia. And we spoke again last night. The Admiral and I agree that peace, stability, and good relations are the best path for our two great and strong countries. As President Trump said, his historic “G2 meeting” set the tone for everlasting peace and success for the U.S. and China. The Department of War will do the same — peace through strength, mutual respect, and positive relations. Admiral Dong and I also agreed that we should set up military-to-military channels to deconflict and deescalate any problems that arise. We have more meetings on that coming soon. it's complicated but it's good to see the administration taking a nascent and independent interest in african affairs, especially in light of the chinese push into the region

unlike in much of the middle east today there are still more clearly defined light/dark shades of grey in africa. there's a modern day slave trade wherever the islamic militias in the north operate and while there are questions about tribal sovereignty that make it difficult to parse trump weighing in on the side of the yorubans is both historically precedented wrt american foreign policy in the region and sensibly favoring an allied population over a mostly hostile one

lagos and kigali are going to be the two hot spots for foreign investment in africa and are both on track to be african powers of note in their respective regions. probably good to shore up the investments now

china has invested a lot in parts of the continent but as i understand it returns have been iffy and there's been a lot of pullout in the last 8-9 years to focus on issues closer to home instead. a lot of chinese aid goes to propping up legacy socialist states in africa now that the russians have divested and the gains from that are pretty slim to say the least. as time goes by it's looking like belt and road was less about building lasting investment infrastructure and more about the sorts of resource extraction operations endemic to the continent

burkina faso takes a good amount of chinese aid but afaik the country is still crumbling and the central government is less and less of an authority over the nation's territory as the years go by
