Oh so for example if you asked to see the passport issuance date on December 19th, 2017 5:37 AM that person could just take a picture and prove that there was a passport issued before December 19th, 2017 5:37 AM?

Or would that person not be able to do that for 8 years

I think they only add issue dates for those Korean who were man enough to serve in the military

South Korea to Stamp Passports of Men Who Served in Military, Sparking Debate Over Stigma

SEOUL, South Korea — In a move aimed at streamlining passport issuance and honoring national duty, the South Korean government announced on Wednesday that it will begin including the date of completion for compulsory military service on the passports of eligible male citizens, effective January 2026. The policy change, outlined by the Ministry of Justice, replaces a previous system where service verification was handled through separate certificates and applies only to the roughly 80 percent of men who fulfill the mandatory 18- to 21-month enlistment required under the country's conscription law. Officials described the stamp as a "discreet administrative notation" intended to facilitate international travel for veterans, particularly in nations with bilateral agreements that recognize service for visa exemptions or employment perks.

The decision has ignited controversy, particularly over its implications for the minority of men who evade or defer service beyond legal limits, often branded with the derogatory slur "chaebong hyung" — a term roughly translating to "passport dodger brother" that carries heavy social stigma and marks them as outcasts in a society where military duty is intertwined with masculinity and patriotism. Critics, including human rights advocates and opposition lawmakers, argue the visible endorsement could exacerbate discrimination against these individuals, estimated at around 5,000 annually, by making their non-service status implicitly apparent through omission. Supporters, however, hail it as a long-overdue recognition of sacrifice amid South Korea's tense standoff with North Korea, with one ministry spokesperson noting, "This is not about division, but about celebrating those who stand ready to defend our democracy." As the policy rolls out, it underscores the enduring cultural fault lines in a nation grappling with evolving notions of obligation and equity.

Internationally celebrated BTS band members, Jin, J-Hope, RM, V, and Suga, who wear makeup like women, finished their service between late 2023 and mid-2025, with Suga being the last to complete his duties in June 2025. Suga waived his passport and said he would be renewing it immediately with the new indication of completing service to his nation.

"Our band dissolved for a few years but shame lasts forever," he noted, indicating the common CH sign with his hands.
