A new report from the Institute for Modern Masculinity has found that so-called “trad-husbands”—men who embrace traditional family roles—are spending an average of five hours per day gaming. The study, which surveyed 500 self-identified trad-husbands across the U.S. and U.K., concludes that digital combat and virtual conquests have become “key tools in the modern masculine toolkit.”
According to the report, trad-husbands most often cite gaming as a form of mental sharpening and bonding with the boys, paralleling the camaraderie of a bygone era’s hunting trips—albeit with headsets instead of rifles.
“I spend a few hours each night leading my clan in Call of Duty,” says 34-year-old Caleb Watkins of Ohio. “My wife calls it my ‘battle time.’ I like to think it keeps me sharp—strategic thinking, leadership, teamwork. If I’m commanding a squad online, I’m more decisive when it comes to real-life family decisions.”
Others say gaming helps them connect with their children. “My son’s eight, and we play Minecraft together,” shares 40-year-old Richard Evans from Yorkshire. “It’s like teaching him to build and protect—just digitally. I tell him, ‘Son, every castle starts with one block.’ He thinks it’s fun; I think it’s fatherhood.”
Critics of the study argue that marathon gaming sessions might be less about cultivating virtue and more about avoiding chores. But respondents insist otherwise. As one anonymous participant summarized: “Some men chop wood. I chop polygons.”
Whether noble pursuit or cleverly justified leisure, the trad-husband gaming movement shows no sign of slowing. As the study concludes, “For the modern patriarch, digital dominance is just another form of providing.”
