Serious: how can I take my job less seriously and avoid burnout?

Won't go into too much detail, but I have a large workload where I feel burned out by the end of each day. Saturday is a recovery day. Sunday I feel somewhat better, but I can never truly relax. I think the root cause is that I'm responsible for a lot more than I was a few years ago, and as a result I have to grind through each work day without taking much of a break.
At the end of the day, my job is not that important: I'm not a doctor saving lives, a nurse treating the sick, etc. I've talked to my doctor a few times about my difficulties managing stress, and I think he described it better than I can: I work like I have a gun to my head. It's clearly not healthy, and it's taking a toll on me both physically and psychologically: I feel tired most of the time, don't feel refreshed after a weekend or even a vacation, stress eating has made me gain weight, etc.
My net worth is nearly $1M with no debt. I'm not living paycheck-to-paycheck. I'm not a doctor or paramedic saving lives. But I still live in fear of losing my job, still feel overwhelmed by my workload, etc. I don't know what to do. |
