The drugs have definite physiological effects, the question is whether they fix or treat most things people have wrong with them. They don't. But benzos are excellent for making acute anxiety disappear (not for treating chronic anxiety problems but useful in other contexts). That's probably psychopharmacology's biggest success. Also anti-psychotics will make your acute psychosis go away, but at a great side-effect cost, and they aren't great for chronic schizo. If you have that you're fucked. the same applies to psychotherapy, which is why it didn't get any more effective after having all the woo drained out of it to appease bureaucrats. |
