Disney executives spent years trying to attract families to the company's storied theme parks, but ultimately found that model frustrating and outdated.

"Let's face it, our typical fan is an overweight 32 year-old woman who isn't having kids," said Daniel Schein, a Disney marketing manager. "If her whole life is Mickey Mouse, and God knows she has the disposable income, then let's get her in the park," he added.

With the new ban on children taking effect in 2027, Disney plans to demolish all child-friendly sections of each park, replacing them with wine bars, brunch counters, and selfie booths.

Disney has always been selling to adults, because children seldom have their own money and the only way they get to go to Disney World is if they convince a parent or guardian to take them. To sell to children you either have to convince the child to convince the parent to buy your product, or you have to convince the parent that the child wants them to buy the product for the child. It's much simpler to sell directly to adults, as Disney, the Lego Group, Nintendo, and other brands have recently figured out. If you hate Disney adults, AFOLs, and Nintendies, you should be advocating for some kind of national child allowance scheme where every child gets like $1,000 a month to spend on whatever they want no matter what their moms or dads say, plus an annual travel grant to go to one of a list of pre-approved kid-friendly tourist destinations.

Do any white middle class families even take their kids to Disneyland anymore

I feel like it's just not even a thing now. Like there's just other options for family vacations that are objectively better in so many ways

Disney Announces Strategic Evolution of Theme Park Experience to Prioritize Next-Generation Guest Segments

BURBANK, Calif. — September 10, 2026 — The Walt Disney Company today announced a comprehensive strategic initiative to reposition its global theme park portfolio around the evolving needs, preferences and purchasing behaviors of its most engaged adult guests.

Beginning in 2027, Disney Parks will commence a phased transition toward an adult-forward guest experience, reflecting extensive consumer research, evolving household demographics and the company's commitment to delivering differentiated, premium entertainment experiences across its portfolio.

Under the initiative, Disney will gradually reduce the operational footprint dedicated to traditional child-oriented attractions and amenities while expanding offerings designed to support adult leisure, social engagement and high-value guest experiences.

A New Era of Guest-Centric Innovation

As part of the strategic evolution, Disney Parks will evaluate opportunities to introduce enhanced adult-oriented programming, including expanded culinary concepts, premium lounges, elevated retail environments, immersive social spaces and other differentiated experiences.

The company expects these initiatives to create additional opportunities to increase guest engagement, extend length of stay and drive per-capita spending while maintaining the distinctive storytelling, creativity and operational excellence for which Disney Parks are known.

Disney will also undertake a comprehensive review of existing attractions and guest infrastructure to identify opportunities for portfolio optimization, experience modernization and capital reallocation.

Investing in the High-Value Guest

The strategy reflects a broader shift toward serving consumers who demonstrate strong brand affinity, significant discretionary spending capacity and a demonstrated willingness to purchase premium experiences.

Disney's research indicates that its most engaged adult guests increasingly view the parks not simply as family destinations, but as lifestyle platforms capable of supporting dining, entertainment, nostalgia, social connection and premium leisure.

The transition will be implemented through a multi-year planning process designed to minimize disruption while maximizing long-term shareholder value.

Disney will continue to evaluate market conditions, guest feedback, capacity requirements and portfolio performance before determining the specific timing and scope of individual changes.

The company emphasized that the initiative remains subject to ongoing operational, financial and regulatory review.

Additional details regarding specific park transformations, guest eligibility frameworks and the future of character-based programming will be communicated at a later date.

About The Walt Disney Company

The Walt Disney Company, together with its subsidiaries and affiliates, is a diversified global entertainment enterprise with operations spanning entertainment, experiences and consumer products. Through its iconic brands, franchises and destinations, Disney seeks to create experiences that deliver enduring value for guests, consumers and shareholders around the world.

Forward-Looking Statement: This announcement contains forward-looking statements regarding potential strategic initiatives, operating models, guest experiences and capital allocation priorities. Actual results and implementation timelines may differ materially based on a variety of factors, including consumer demand, market conditions, operational considerations and other risks and uncertainties.
