Have you ever gone to a Safeway or a Key Food in the ghetto? It’s a fucking disaster. Food and Jheri curl getting stolen everywhere, kids running around buck wild, shopping carts left wherever (dinging cars) or being stolen, etc. A chain supermarket needs a pretty different assortment for a store like this: shitty chicken on “special,” zero fresh meat or seafood that will spoil when it’s not sold because it’s too expensive, twice as much grape soda and chips. 99% of customers on EBT and surly. Homeless people breaking into cars in parking lot and monopolizing recycling/can return machine. What supermarket chain would want to take all that risk for a historical 2-3% gross margin?
Seriously, if you ever get a chance, go to a super market on a Sunday in a ghetto part of DC/Baltimore/Philly/Brooklyn. In my observation poor whites go to Walmart or Target but poor black people go to these local shitholes that are awful. |
