ohtani's offensive WAR of 4.9 puts him 20th in the bigs, well below tatis at 7.3, soto at 6.8, etc.

his pitching WAR of 4.1 puts him at 21st in the bigs, well below wheeler at 7.6, buehler and ray at 6.7 etc

of course, his overall WAR of 9 puts him well above #2 wheeler (7.8), correa (7.2)

so the best player in baseball is a guy who is about the 20th best hitter and 20th best pitcher. does that make him the best player in baseball, or is it gimmicky shit to manipulate the data?

if ur a GM, would u rather have ohtani on your team or some other star?

is ohtani just a striver? is the GM risking ohtani's long-term longevity by having him both pitch and hit? does he add more long-term value to the organization by just doing one? would it be better for his long term earning potential to pick just one?

if some other star pitcher played DH on off days, could he rack up a WAR close to ohtanis's? is ohtani's feat unprecedented since babe ruth because nobody's really tried and it's not a good idea for someone's career, or is he just a unique athlete?

  2025 review of the OP:

ohtani was 6th in the mlb in offensive war (6.6), almost 3 wins below judge (9.4)

and he had a pitching WAR of 1.1, placing him in a tie for 196th.

so he's the 6th best hitter in the league, and a gimmick pitcher who pitched a few innings once in a while and is totally inconsequential.

  oh wow what a GOAT
