So back in medieval times, people believed the moon was a perfect, unblemished sphere. They didn't actually know wtf the moon even was, but they figured whatever it was, it was put there by God, and God wouldn't put anything up in the heavens that wasn't a perfectly smooth, round object.

So Galileo makes this device that lets anyone see the surface of the moon, and the first thing you see is that it's a pockmarked unholy mess of craters and mountains and other surface disturbances. All totally random, so symmetry whatsoever.

This made church officials MAF but what could they do? He wasn't pointing to some words on paper or describing a heretical concept. He just made this thing that let you look at the moon and see how fucked up it was. MAF catholics couldn't do SHIT.

Yes. For some reason there are people who think he was put to death but he lived a natural life and died at 77. His works were temporarily banned, but the fact is you could look through a telescope and just SEE he was right. Furthermore there was yuge demand for telescopes as soon as he invented them, so it's not like he wasn't busy. Every ship's captain wanted one of dem things, not to mention kings and shit.

After a period with the friendly Ascanio Piccolomini (the Archbishop of Siena), Galileo was allowed to return to his villa at Arcetri near Florence in 1634, where he spent part of his life under house arrest. Galileo was ordered to read the Seven Penitential Psalms once a week for the next three years. However, his daughter Maria Celeste relieved him of the burden after securing ecclesiastical permission to take it upon herself.[154]

It was while Galileo was under house arrest that he dedicated his time to one of his finest works, Two New Sciences. Here he summarised work he had done some forty years earlier, on the two sciences now called kinematics and strength of materials, published in Holland to avoid the censor. This book was highly praised by Albert Einstein.[155]

They thought it was a "pearl." It's color isn't uniform but they figured it was still spherical and smooth.
