not much 'happened' except that i existed in a world in which certain famous writers like tolstoy and faulkner had inserted long meandering passages in their novels about the cutting-edge mathematics of the day. like anna karenina was actually over 1,700 pages instead of 'only' 1,000 in most editions, but 700 of that was long weird digressions about lie algebras and the work of bernhard reimann and so on, complete with extensive chapters full of equations.
and there was a big debate in literary studies over the 'mathematical movement,' and the propriety of editions of novels with the math taken out and so on. and these debates got quite violent, including bombings and one of the first western drone assassinations in 2017.
