i suppose reading up on how they penetrated left wing groups (civil rights, black panthers, yippies, etc) in the 50s-70s might give better indication of their protocols. It may just be something like "we will circle back regularly to take your temperature", it might be "get persons X, Y, Z on the phone and get them talking while we record", it might be as extreme as "your talking points are detailed in this memo". It certainly involves greasing the skids of their career within their left wing / right wing audience.

An example in plain sight is Richard Spencer. Its public record that in the wake of Charlottesville he endured multiple days of 8+ hours "depositions", interviews and such. And he never faced criminal charges. And then he emerged, after a silence, as a reliable critic of MAGA and WNism.

You can tell the Richard Spencer story one way -- he was always an edgelord, always cultivated ironic distance, and after 2016 he just moved to safer and easier terrain from which to be edgy, countersignalling the right. You could explain it that he simply had his balls blown off by a seriously traumatic series of events and realized he no longer wants to play with dynamite.
