Why was Japan more afraid of Russia than the USA even after Midway?

The army favored taking the Soviet far East but after the got their asses kicked, it was a popular opinion and the army lost favor.

Japan wasn't even testing Soviet territory in that conflict. It was a battle of choice by the USSR, fought in order to make a point.
None of those factors were in play in December 1941, because Moscow itself was under siege by Hitler. If that if had been happening in 1939, there's no way Stalin would have committed all those forces to the east.
2. The Japanese had CONFIRMED sightings of Soviet eastern forces fighting in Moscow by December 5, 1941. They KNEW the east was unguarded. Furthermore Yamamoto had told the kang that an assault on US would end in disaster. Yet they still chose to bomb Pearl Harbor on December 7. |
