Rav4 plug in hybrid cr? Have solar so "charging" would be free. Tired of putting goysoline in my truck all the time. Not a liberal btw

If you don't need the space to haul shit, the Prius is hard to beat. Not a plug-in hybrid, but gets amazing gas mileage and looks sharp. The Honda Civic hybrid hatchback is a good one as well if you need more cargo space and want something a little more fun to drive.

Plus the hatch will let you store more clothes for all your clothespigging adventures.

50+ MPG with no need to plug in. Looks cooler. Though to be fair the Rav4 is great as is the hybrid Credited Response Vehicle.

There’s a new version of the Prius (the Prime or something) that I believe is a full plug-in hybrid. And then they make Lexus versions of all of the Toyota hybrids too

And yea, I’d definitely go plug-in hybrid. The Toyota systems don’t seem to be unreliable even with the extra mechanical complication. And it really sucks to have a car that’s basically useless for even a medium-distance road trip.

Why is the battery range so low? Is it just a small battery? can't teslas go hundreds of miles?

Yea, it’s a small battery that’s meant to be kept topped off by the gas engine. But the battery smooths out the drivetrain’s calls for power during acceleration and recaptures energy during deceleration, so you get that amazing gas mileage.

I think that they size the batteries to be capable of a short suburban commute on electric only and not much more.

for phev (plug-in hybrid) the battery is not MEANT to be kept topped off by the gas engine. the correct use case for a phev is someone whose daily commute is less than the electric only range and will charge their car nightly at home (or work)

that way, most miles are driven under electric power exclusively and for longer trips the gas engine is used together with the battery as a hybrid.

if you buy a phev and never charge it, you're misusing it and lugging a heavy battery around for no reason. you'd be better off with a conventional hybrid

problem is that demand for toyota and lexus is high and the companies are carefully rationing production to keep prices high. so it's impossible to find a deal and waits are long for new vehicles.

you could try the used market

There's LESS mechanical complication in Toyota hybrids because there's no transmission and the internal pressure in the engine is lower

No it isn't. They call it an "eCVT" but it's just a planetary gearbox doohicky that absorbs no mechanical force. It's nothing like an actual CVT

Depends on your criteria. We we've had only EVs since the beginning of the year. Also, do you have or will you get home charging? If you don't/won't then don't get a full EV.

Regular outlet is very, very slow. I did this for a few weeks while I was waiting for the home charging system to get installed. If you have access to a 240v/50 amp outlet then sure, you can skip the permanent hardwired setup though permanent hardwire is always nicer.

Counterpoint. My EV charger periodically glitches and needs a hard reset. So I’m happy that it’s on a 240V NEMA plug and I can just unplug and reset it from the garage. Saves me the trip to breaker in the basement.

Is it a little slower than it could be if hardwired? Sure. But it still recharges the car completely overnight.

Mine is a JuiceBox brand that Tommy’s cousin sold me back when we bought our non-tesla EV. But that company has since left the north american market and deleted their app. Since it’s on a plug it’d be very easy to replace, but it still works and I can’t be bothered.

no i'm an in-house stud tyvm. i expect porsche/bmw/mercedes make "better" hybrid vehicles -- and i'll admit those mercedes eqs things look kind of space age. but i like older porsche and bmw, the new ones just don't do it for me. the honda crv hybrid after the 2023 redesign is a superb vehicle that is exactly the car most people are looking for. the rav4 has floatier steering that i don't like as much
