This chick on YouTube has a channel that constantly pops up in my feed. Erin Talks Finance or something. Young, cute chick who talks about retirement planning for the middle class. When she talks about having one million dollars saved, she treats it like this incredible thing. She even says it like Doctor Evil in Austin Powers. One Milllllion Dollars. Which could produce a retirement income of 47 thoussssand dollars. It's like she's a time traveler.

Financial planners treat $1m as the generic desired portfolio size for retirement for middle class people. Obviously, individuals present different circumstances, but $1m is clearly the one size fits all goal.

It’s strange because every retiree I know doesn’t even use their portfolio before RMDs. Everyone lives off of their income from pensions, annuities, social security.

Financial advisors are all scammy sales people just looking to rifle through your pockets. That goes for the friendly face at Edward Jones as much as it goes for your cute cunt Erin.

You’re missing the part where the retiree doesn’t do anything and doesn’t spend any part of their portfolio until RMDs kick in at 73 and even then, the retiree struggles to spend their money. Then they go to the retirement home and it’s all taken in 6 months.

I have about $2.5m in assets, dragged down by $395,000 in liabilities. 19.5% leverage or something like that. It’s basically killing me all the stress. I don’t know how you could ever borrow more than like 30% of your gross assets. That must be like sweating bullets. Trump did it I guess. Balls of steel and ice in his veins. I wasn’t built that way.

Crazy that ~3M people/1.3M households have a NW of $15M or more. Anyone with that much money who is over 67 should get taxed an extra $50k per year as a pure fuck boomers tax. We should have that as our fall back position if they want to be spared by the death panels.

I've posted about it before but its really going to fuck up wealth dynamics in America when boomers die and millenials start inheriting their wealth.

Boomers have so much money. My parents had probably lower middle class incomes and they might have a $1 mm estate whwen everything is said and done.

People's whose parents were UMC probably will stand to inherit $5-10 million.

Imagine competing with someone to buy a house who is in their prime earnings year plus got $500,000 - $5 million in free money...

Between boomers booming it away and nursing homes, there might not be enough many large dollar inheritances to move the needle much.

The nursing home piece is such a wild roulette wheel on the end of everything. My dad bought LTCI but I basically assume they will find some way to scam us anyway. Both his parents had long slow dying phases that were persistent/recurring but slowly progressing cancers and his mom capped it off with Alzheimer’s for the last 18 months. He’s done an admirable job staying healthy but he’s the most left brained engineer ever and Catholic as fuck, so he will cling to every second of life no matter how shitty it gets. He’s probably going to live to his mid 90s based on how well he’s holding up, which, to be clear, is awesome and I’m very proud of him and happy that he will get almost as long in retirement as he did as a working adult. But it seems inevitable that he will be Alzheimer’s/dementia pwn3d enough to require 24 hour care for at least the last couple years. I think if I end up like him I’m 100% down to assisted suicide myself if I made it to 85+ and it means my kids get millions more to protect themselves instead of some fuckface company that owns an assisted living facility taking it off of me.
