| Milton intended Paradise Lost as a critique of monarchy. Thoughts?

Satan's hell has elements of both Republic and Monarchy and while Milton was a Republican he wasn't coming at the subject from a strictly political angle
Generally outside of the historical crit angle I read it as an anti-Catholic polemic as well as a rebuttal to the strict dualism expected of the Roman foundations of the church (even in Anglican England) of the time
Islam's poetic tradition has a similar older tale that tries to humanize Satan as a creature (a sort of angelic djinn, embodied in smokeless fire) effectively betrayed by Allah as a demiurge experimenting with the various substances of the world and the aftermath has Satan as an anti-human but still pious and independent force
