Why was Japan more afraid of Russia than the USA even after Midway?

After Midway, that Siberian oil would have looked mighty tempting. And everyone knew Stalin was pinned down fighting Germany at that time.
So why didn't Japan call a lid on the Pacific war and tell the Kwantung Army to get that oil?

They were planning Pearl Harbor years in advance. They knew perfectly well that they were already entering a two-front war. They had hoped the US would quickly back down but even if that happened they always knew that any attack on the USSR would be a brutal slog.

As I understand it...The Japanese got beat pretty bad by the Soviets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Khalkhin_Gol huge disgrace and right or wrong it was decided the Soviets were not an easy target, especially compared to the European Asian colonies the imperial navy preferred. The army favored taking the Soviet far East but after the got their asses kicked, it was a popular opinion and the army lost favor.
Then the army tries a coup
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_26_incident which failed and they never regained respectability. Intel sucked back then too.

1. that incident involved the Mongolian border, and the USSR's desire to prove to its allies that a defensive pact meant something. Japan wasn't even testing Soviet territory in that conflict. It was a battle of choice by the USSR, fought in order to make a point.
None of those factors were in play in December 1941, because Moscow itself was under siege by Hitler. If that if had been happening in 1939, there's no way Stalin would have committed all those forces to the east.
2. The Japanese had CONFIRMED sightings of Soviet eastern forces fighting in Moscow by December 5, 1941. They KNEW the east was unguarded. Furthermore Yamamoto had told the kang that an assault on US would end in disaster. Yet they still chose to bomb Pearl Harbor on December 7.
