Had a big FSF period many years ago. Read his essay "the crack up" and I always think about one part. I may be remembering it badly, but he describes how he hit absolute bottom, and the way that he renders his unflinching verdict on himself is, he writes "i became the man who says I would really love to help but i can't."
this detonated a nuke in my brain and I have thought about it for 20+ years

i think because its such a mundane, and thus believable, evil
he touched on that rock bottom immorality, truly detestable evil, is not most often murdering a child or something. Its telling your friend in need, "can't help" with a fake smile
and recognizing this is what he had become. not some mass murderer, but one of a hundred million non-helpers. One of a hundred million ways that the world was fallen
