Wife bought me out of the old house for 2 million. I bought a new house a block away that was 1K sq/ft bigger for the same price and renovated it. Moved in three months ago. It has a sauna, hot tub, infinity pool, cold plunge, secret room with a movie theater, library, etc. I also put in a 300 gallon salt water fish tank! I actually live 3 doors down from Chandler now too. I can see his bathroom from my driveway!

right. if the house was being honest about what it is -- an attempt at a king's palace for 1 -- it should be significantly more audacious, have more character, etc. right now its a sad in-between where it can't quite reckon with the fact that it will be empty -- if not physically, then emotionally, spiritually -- until it's sold

Why would you think that people worth $100 million want to live in mansion estates costing $10 million. Maybe old money types like that but I think for the majority of people at that level who are new to the money they don’t really care about a real estate flex, it’s just a place to live with enough square footage and “nice” countertops and stuff

Just depends on what you personally value. Obviously someone at that level has a choice. Ken Griffen is building an actual palace. CSLG lives in in a typical 850k prefab flyover McMansion that costs way more due to CA real estate insanity. But he could make different choices if he were a different person. He's not. This is the person that he is. Some rich people live in stunning homes with a lot of character. That's not who this guy is. He is living his rich guy fantasy which is tasteless and prole as fuck. Maybe if you were rich you would do the same. He seems to love travel and prole experiences. To each their own. It's not Balmoral. He's not that guy and he has never claimed to be. He's the millionaire we have, not the millionaire we want.

it's less about scale than taste. but we live in a nouveau riche society where an overabundance of cheap chink shit has killed new money's last line of defense against its own poor taste: the bespoke tailor, the interior designer, etc., to whom uncultured petty merchants like cslg once outsourced aesthetic judgment.

Check out Michael Eisner's Malibu estate. More thought has been put into that than the cumulative lifetime brainpower of thousands of people. Execs used to have real taste and try and outdo each other. It's a masterpiece.

impressive. some people have so much money that serious design teams can't help but be engaged for the scale of the project involved, but even they often manage to fuck it up because we as a culture have lost so much will to taste. but for every michael eisner there are thousands of shitlaw kings and regional mcdonalds franchise emperors with enough money to ball out but without the first idea of how to do so, and that plus DTC everything has completely overwhelmed the taste industry.

I think people really overestimate how smart and creative and passionate rich people are. Most rich people were really good at one simple thing. A hundred years ago you could get insanely rich just by flipping burgers with maximal intensity and drive. There were countless huge burger chains started by people who didn't know how to read and didn't even understand business they were just colossally hard working and could do 1 thing really well. That's how a lot of businesses are.

Like gun to the head who makes more money the Ferrari dealership or the Honda one? No one creative is passionate about Hondas. I met a rich as fuck immigrant family who came here in the 80s to work in nursing homes and wipe old people's asses. They now own a nursing home empire. This is the typical rags to riches story. People with mettle and grind and hyperfocus on their business. You're right Eisner's case is rare. He oversaw the company during a classic period of immense creative and financial success. These people are insanely rare.

Most people who have taste and vision and are capable of great beauty have no ambition, drive, or practical sense. And most people who are rich enough to design the Taj Mahal live in ugly shitboxes and would never notice the difference.

But you're right about one thing. The elites of yore tried to emulate old money and buy class. They hired artisans. Today? Not so much. It's Queen of Versailles shit. Upjumped proles who think luxury is you can buy anything at Wal-Mart. There does seem to be a cultural shift where no one is embarrassed about being tacky. No one is competing with the House of Windsor. Really does seem like everything has changed. Age of social media and too many immigrants. The cultural decline of WASPs. Lots of explanations but it does seem like we're headed headlong into Idiocracy. Just remember that the rich don't typically ascend on artistic or creative merit. It's usually some asshole who pounded a single successful idea into oblivion.

all cr. but cheap DTC economics and the corporate-academic takeover of design were serious nails in the coffin. if you got rich in 1950 you didn’t have a choice but to go to a real tailor for your wardrobe even if you cheaped out. and the 1960-70s california new rich were still getting mid-century modern villas with eames chairs and shit. now the petty rich buy everything for themselves without guidance, and even where there is design consulting available there is nobody around doing interesting yet appealing modern design because the taste-makers are professors who design for the sake of theory and academic status, and global architectural outfits doing boring design by committee to get multi-billion dollar deals done. there's no more aspiration to emulate old money but there's not even a coherent and interesting modern design movement for people like clsg to glom onto. just prefab mcmansion designs with the same mass produced parts from china.

You can always look to the Past for inspiration.

It's funny my father who is a wealthy boomer with a lifelong net zero interest in materialism whatsoever the one thing he judges people hard on is their suits. He owns one dress watch, he has never bought a sportscar. But he is ruthless about tacky suits. He can look at a suit in the blink of an eye tell you what's wrong with it. He keeps a mental list of whose suits are Right and Wrong. Wrong suits are basically a crime against humanity. They are Rules goddamnit. He says people who don't have the right suit he can't take seriously and aren't worth listening to. It's funny that's how I feel about people who believe in trans kids. A full write off. That's how he is about suits. If someone is on TV with an ill fitting suit he has to leave the room. Call me when they have a good suit.

it's funny the same thing is happening in audio which i mention above. not too long ago if you wanted decent in-home audio at all you had to work with your local hifi stereo store or electronics store to plan out a full system with separate components and they would advise you on what to buy and how to set it up. now cookie-cutter powered speakers are so ubiquitous and cheap that rich people forget that high-end audio is a thing and most people just end up with the same sonos speakers and soundbars, or in clsg’s case a busted $200 turntable from amazon. whereas for $3000-5000 he could get an above entry level hifi system that would sound legitimately good and wouldn't ruin his vinyl. meanwhile everyone who has held on to traditional hifi is extremely judgey in the same way that you describe your dad with suits.

Rich people don't even know or care about hi-fi. They can't even tell the difference. A lot of them that I know are drunks and they care about cars and travel and booze. Part of the problem is there's no one to impress. Having a gorgeous pad impresses no one. Knowing a bunch of influencers and being on vacation all time is the currency. Richmos love to tell you about famous people they know. Never once heard about a hi fi setup.

Those numbers are too high.

In any case, I assumed it was at least a semi-serious hobby. If not, no big deal.

Many wealthy people don't spend too much; they spend too little on the right things. They mistakenly keep optimizing for more wealth, security, and optionality long after money has stopped being the real constraint. It becomes irrational frugality: passing up spending on time, ease, health, relationships, experiences, or meaningful projects that would do more for their well-being than another dollar saved.

Those generic vents with no architectural value should be wall colored.

Even better would be either hidden vents or vents with intentional character.

yeah and that area is full of mcmansions. finding something architecturally interesting is very difficult and often requires a major premium. so i don't fault him for living in a mcmansion.

but he just renovated it. and it looks like he used the cheapest, lowest quality finishes around. everyone with any taste in southern california (who either outgrew or can't afford nice architecture and is relegated to a mcmansion) puts a lot of effort into finishes and decor that make their place personal and beautiful. but when you're an empty fraudster inside, you don't do that.

IDK where he lives but let's say Encino. He should have gotten something like this for himself:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/17319-Magnolia-Blvd-Encino-CA-91316/19978662_zpid/

Still fucking stupid and soulless, but at least has the benefit of having finishes that don't automatically read as cheap, and has the kind of stuff he would like like a theater and a pool.

What's crazy is that he would appear not to live like a miser, exactly, but rather he has the tastes of an actual child, who would never invest in creating a beautiful space but instead fill it with toys.

He should buy a Charger with a scat pack and wrap it in neon.

It just needs a paint job because there is too much white. But all these houses are built the same. Its the same as the one next door. Who cares if they aren't real hardwood floor. He has little kids (at least 50% of the time) and they would get marked up anyway.

Its got a lot of space. That's the key thing. Its a great home for a single dad. I'm actually surprised you can get one of those Calabasas for $1.7 mil or whatever it was.
