The town itself is myeh, but you are a short drive from about a dozen of the best waterfalls in the East and several of the best views on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville gets all the love, but Brevard absolutely shits on Asheville unless you care about microbreweries and art galleries.
The Grand Staircase/Escalante Monument is just as pretty as Utah's "Mighty Five," but has about 2% of the people. You need to go off road to see most of it, though.
And while I wouldn't go so far as to recommend Pittsburgh as a travel destination, I was there for a family thing recently and it was surprisingly 180. I was expecting a decaying Rust Belt hellscape, but it was actually fairly picturesque, and the museums and restaurants were excellent. |
