Your workplace, the social clubs you and your wife belonged to, most likely your children's schools, and your church if you were Protestant would all have been restructured as Nazi organization or brought under a Nazi umbrella organization. University students and professionals were sometimes forced to do manual labor or farmwork. There were donation drives and volunteer events that were secretly mandatory. There were block captains who spied on you and reported on you if you were not sufficiently pro-Nazi, and the Hitler Youth and League of German Girls encouraged members, and membership was ultimately mandatory for children, to report on their parents too. It would have felt suffocating. Then there was the Strength through Joy Car, maybe the first quality, affordable car ever mass-produced, and the Party organized cruises and vacation tours that the common man were able to go on and see the world, before the war started.

springtime 1941 the wehrmacht defeats yugoslavia and greece. yugoslavia takes them a week. the greeks shortly after. the nazis plant the german flag in crete.

summer 1941 the wehrmacht explodes through the USSR and reaches moscow.

In early August 1941, all of Europe is under direct German control or under the control of states that will do anything you say, and there is no sign that the German war machine is slowing down. you have achieved what the romans did at the very height of their power. a thousand year reich on the horizon.

the first cracks are seen in operation smolensk, which, though a "win", began a fast, then gradual decline that continues through the day of this post.
