Fact: China is only withholding magnets from US defense contractors, not consumer goods manufacturers. So technically there's no embargo!

our rare earth weakness is entirely a creature of the Deep State. we have nearly all the rare earth minerals that we need. for various reasons, it was seen as good policy to move all mining, refining, and manufacturing to nations that hate us.

China just flexed on the US industrial base. it's a shame because we have nearly all the rare earth minerals we need but we decided to let China have a monopoly. and it will take a decade or longer for us to crank up our rare earth industry.

Japan offers a cautionary tale. In 2010, following a maritime standoff over the Senkaku Islands, China abruptly cut off rare-earths exports to Japan. In response, the Japanese government pursued a series of strategic measures: investing in Lynas Rare Earths, an Australian producer; boosting domestic research and development in recycling and substitution; forging its own commercial partnerships with Chinese magnet manufacturers; and building strategic stockpiles to cushion future supply shocks. More than a decade later, Japan still sources over 70% of its rare-earths imports from China.

after seeing this happen, and having chosen to adopt an antagonistic posture against China, the US did this to prepare:

its ok im sure trump is building a bunch of processing plants cause with rare earths it seems the issue isnt finding them, they are abundant, its processing them

so trump surely is doing some push to give tax credits and subsidies to comps that open processing plants, right? amrite? surely he thought this one thru, he has a big huge brain
