For some reason I skipped the Thinkpad and bought a Fujitsu. It was really slim and portable and had great battery life and set me back about $3k. WTF

My first laptop was a Fujitsu

They made a lot of great stuff back in the day. They did a lot of weird form factors, they had a lot of tiny laptops and they also had bigger ones with a lot of multimedia stuff.

I got mine in 2002 and it had a large screen, an optical drive that played DVDs and burned CDs (somewhat new and novel for a laptop back then), and had an optical audio out.

I actually still have the stupid thing. I have this weird reluctance to let it go. I don't know why, it basically ruined my life.

Mine never let me down, but it must have been the reason I couldn't afford a gaming PC until years later

I bought a T60 just before 1L. During 2L, I had an argument with my girlfriend who was living with me at the time. She became distraught and ran out of the apartment without any pants on. I didn’t know what the hell she was going to do, so I grabbed my phone and just left. I came back later that night and she’d broken the window to get in. Got the window replaced a day or two later, but I never checked to make sure the window was locked. A couple of weeks later, sure enough, while I was out someone slid the window open, snuck in, and robbed me—took my backpack, after dumping my text books out, stole like 4 pairs of athletic shorts out of my laundry, my T60, all of my quarters for laundry, but mysteriously left my (by that time ex girlfriend)‘s engagement ring sitting on the bureau. It was very clearly an in and out job. I think my renters policy paid out like $1000. It sucked. I was broke. And broken hearted. Had to buy a new computer with my 2L summer money.

You edited

I was going to ask what screen you got on your T61. I got the oafish newfangled 16:9 15.4" 1680x1050 model, when really the cr was the 4:3 14.1" 1400x1050

I think the T/X61 were the last of the 4:3 Thinkpads

Mine was a t60 I think. The replacement was like a t610? I can’t remember

Edit—the replacement must have been a t500, and it was oafishly large with a big battery extender on the back, and quite heavy. It’s easy to forget how heavy these computers used to be.

The T series went like T40,41,42,43,60,61,400/500,410/510 etc

X series was sort of the same but it went from X61 to X200

After my Fujitsu I got some kind of Thinkpad with a high res 14" screen and a discrete Nvidia Quadro GPU. That turned out to be the worst Thinkpad ever made because the GPU melted itself and had to be re-balled right after the warranty ran out. I actually paid someone to do it because the laptop was so damn expensive

Why pay someone to do it? The best part about Thinkpads is that they were (and perhaps still are?) the easiest machines to do DIY repairs on. They made all the service manuals readily available & let anyone order parts directly from them. I replaced the fan in my T61 twice.

Other manufacturers, it seemed like they hid all that stuff and made customers go through approved channels for any service on laptops.

I don't have the tools or the fine motor skills to do a reball.

But also, Thinkpads from that era were notorious for having 140 screws you had to remove, each one unique. You needed a tray with numbered compartments to keep them in order. You also had to take pics of what everything looked like before you disassembled it. Thinkpads they make now are totally different and I just repasted my CPU cooler last week

I bought a dell, and I quit using it by 3L, I figured out from first principles that taking notes by hand was a far better way to learn, the entire american educational system has collapsed due to what I learned as a 23 year old

I remember being poor and buying like a $900 Dell for college.

Now I'm somewhat rich and just spent $400 (the equivalent of like $150 back then) on a poasting machine.

For a while you could great deals on used Dell Latitudes with 2 years left on a 3 year warranty. They were egregious Thinkpad rippoffs in terms of design, but they were a lot better than business class laptops from HP. My god.
