“Writing code” is purely an obsession of western devs, particularly pre-gamergate Nerd devs. Because those devs are extremely Nerd-dominated, everything is about the code. You can’t get a western game made to begin with with fewer than 300 people if the devs aren’t Engineering obsessed.

To the 90s/00s PC dev, “writing code” is everything. You were worthless to the whole endeavor if you couldn’t Engineer shit. No mind paid to the actual player who had to navigate the wretched worlds they created. Zero consideration for the fact that they’d get Lost basically forever playing Turok or whatever. Anyway these devs were 100% right to keep the workplace pure and Nerdy as fuck. Because we all know what happens when the gatekeeping stops. Budgets explode and quality fucking craters. But anyway this is why there’s enough of a fixation and why you’d ask to begin with if miyamoto wrote code. Japan is stuck in the 20th century in a lot of ways for better or worse. This idea of “I’m a Nerd. I Engineer things,” Clique based bs doesn’t exist there. A salaryman shows up every day. He does what the company asks of him. He’s not like “Engineering, champ. Headhunters have me on speed dial. $1,000,000k, champ,” He has no ego about it. He’s a lifer. He probably makes like 35k USD with a 135 IQ. Also the average IQ in white collar Tokyo or Kyoto when you step into an office of any kind is probably like 120 or something. When the average is as high as it is, “writing code” isn’t as much of a flex. This is just my opinion which I do NOT state as fact. Discuss.
