COBOL is a simple language. There are few programmers who want to do it because it’s ancient and unsexy, not because it’s hard. So you ca have Claude help replace and maintain it, cool. But the very factor that these ancient systems haven’t been replaced and have to be maintained is because they are in mission critical, heavily regulated spaces like banking and healthcare. So you’re not going to be able to get by without a pretty heavy level of human in the loop involvement and certification.

These big tech firms are a complete race to the bottom. I’ve seen things most wouldn’t believe. And it’s been like that for 15-20 years or more. So if AI melts some of the fat, cool. But I think the business and head count doesn’t fundamentally change anytime soon unless Trump and the GOP act, which they won’t.

Maybe these are bell weathers ahead of a large market drop. I don’t think I’ll buy into them anytime soon. But the price action doesn’t make sense to me against this narrative.
