the Sunni/Shia divide was never as insurmountable as has been presented to us, and this just made it that much easier for Persians to traverse it (again). The reasons for this have to do with Islamic prophesy that BOTH sides believe it, apparently.

Maybe but you haven't articulated why Ramadan is key for that as opposed to just nationalism and stopping jewish hate

The first Shia Imam, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, was struck with a poisoned sword and killed in the month of Ramadan. The fact that Khameni was also killed during Ramadan means he could have been the "hidden Imam" who is prophesied to wreck shit

1. Shia Islam: The Authority of the Living Jurist

In Twelver Shia Islam (the dominant sect in Iran), religious law is not static, but it is not arbitrary.

Mechanism of Change (Ijtihad): Shia theology places a heavy emphasis on Ijtihad (independent reasoning). Qualified scholars (Mujtahids) are encouraged to analyze the Quran and Hadith to derive rulings for modern circumstances.

The Role of the Ruler: Historically, Shia Islam teaches that there is no legitimate Islamic ruler until the return of the 12th Imam (the Mahdi). Therefore, for most of history, Shias did not have a "caliph" or "monarch" to defer to. Instead, they followed the leading religious scholars.
