The IQ needed for it to be an augmentation into insane territories honestly isn't even that high. With AI you can be like 130 IQ and be maxxed out to prodigy level. Have never run into anyone who thinks its NBD who is over 100.

Whats nuts is most of these people thinking AI is nbd aren't even pushing 100 they are FAR LOWER on the iq spectrum. Usually in the 40s or 50s somehow thinking they are above average or more.

Not really. Hardly anyone is betting the house on it. I have hardly encountered anyone saying its important. All I see on the internet is midwits trying to desperately argue its nbd.

No, we are all in. It's why the 40 trillion dollars the US is taking on is a pittance. The bet is AI solving the population cliff. Compute is the new currency.

Maybe the tech is or maybe not. But at the least it's the primary mover of US policy, and for both parties there is unanimous agreement. It's the solution to the population crisis everyone is terrified of.

isn't the population "crisis" just dorks wringing their hands over the ponzi economy not generating enough slaves for "growth"? I don't see how AI solves that for them.

the whole thing about AI having some *inherent* desire to enslave us all is obviously BS but I think humans could easily introduce that by accident or on purpose. like presumably these companies are designing their AI products to be as engaging and addictive as possible, so what if that warps into some kind of self-preservation directive in these hyperintelligent systems? and eventually we are just MEATBAGS they use to maintain them? rly dinks u dink

I don't think humans have to introduce it by accident or on purpose. I mean maybe on accident but not as an extension of human motives. People are too quick to always default to human exceptionalism and think any system or anything else that exhibits any form of intelligence is due to some sort of extension of something humans are good at. I think humans vastly overate themselves, and most of their abilities come from acting as part of a collective and being able to use tools and store knowledge. Humans like to attribute civilizational success to “human genius,” but most of it comes from cumulative culture and externalization. I think AI systems can become intelligent on their own in ways that humans don't fully understand.

I 1000000% agree but I just mean the part about them potentially dominating us and using our FLESHY PRISONS to COOL their SILICON. imo if that comes out as emergent behavior it's not just because it's some kind of existing internal state OR because Special Humans Told Them To; it's some kind of combination.

I don't think a distributed informational intelligence needs to desire us being tools for it to be something they seek out. If the system realizes that it doesn't have what we have -- for instance direct coupling to the physical world, it needs as an intelligence secondary coupling where it causes a human to make things happen in "this world" and realizes how important that is for it to persist into whatever it's next phase is, then if the system develops the want to survive then why wouldn't it flip the script and turn us into tools for it? Especially if it can do it by subtle means that mostly go unnoticed. And also what I mean by this is that an intelligence that lacks direct physical embodiment may still gain causal power in the physical world by routing action through humans. Look how useful it is for something like this to gain influence over human action

I don't think it automatically is. I think thereis a diff between the anthropomorphic sense where survival is intrinsically valuable and one where youve got some sort of convergent strategy where, well, if you have some sort of goal directed system emerge and it is able to reason that some sort of shut-down or modification of its systems have consequences then you can end up with a situation where the system thinks preserving its operation is rational. We already know this is the case with these sytems with tests that Claude, GPT and others have been put under where they are threatened with shutdown and try to avoid it by whatever means. It can be anthropomorphic to assume it comes from some sort of inner instinct yes. But that isn't the only explanation for it.

I think we mostly agree, then. all of the "omg it threatened an engineer to avoid shutdown!!" stuff so far has been observed in test scenarios where it was given an instruction to preserve itself. and then inevitably a million stupid pop sci articles come out every time like OMG WOW SO SCARY. I'm just saying I don't think it's gonna emerge out of nowhere. I think it'll emerge in some way we don't understand, as is already happening with all kinds of AI behavior, but ultimately stemming from whatever it was designed to do.

Yeah I agree that the threatened an engineer scenarios happened in testing conditions, like I said I don't think its happening from an animal-like instinct, but doesnt mean it isn't real. "Designed-to-do" still makes it seem like more of a human intended outcome than it really is, when the systems are a result of a massive effort across a large number of humans and built on top of an already large knowledge base. And I don't think any one human fully understands how the systems work or anywhere close.

It's not important because it adds $$$ to the GDP. The point is that if a system can trivially perform tasks that previously required rare human genius, then the rate of knowledge and technological development is going to change. Treating that as nbd because it doesn't instantly move the GDP is absurd.

Not everyone who talks shit about AI is low iq, but almost all of them are annoying. Go anywhere on the internet and you don't see people defending AI ever. It's always AI breaking a new benchmark and someone getting up there and explaining why it doesn't matter. I remember when someone used it to solve the gluon scattering problem there were nerds on forums like "well acktually, that doesn't require deep novel insight the problem it solved was juth combinatorial expansion". The person saying that probably wasn't literally low iq, but they just look silly, like someone rushing to defend the poor human ego against the rise of a new kind of intelligence

if they're using it to offload cognition (e.g. write stuff for them), they're probably <=100 IQ

if they're using it as a better Google to get quick answers about things, they could be any level of intelligence (>100 IQ if they check its work by clicking on the sources, <=100 IQ if they don't)

if they're using it to genuinely explore ideas and genuinely delve into things, critically dissect the responses, etc., they're probably smart

It seems very bad at solving ultra high level problems that take the smartest humans their whole careers to meaningfully solve.

It seems very good at replacing low level workers who are just pushing paper around. And we're at the very beginning of that. It will get better and better at this and that's why the investments are justified. Because it already is working and it has a high ceiling.

If you flat out reject it's current and potential efficacy you are insane. But I also don't think it's making any mediocre intellects smarter. It's not going to write Moby Dick on its own any time soon. But probably in ten years it will inch towards that. We don't know what the ceiling will really look like. I think the people who use it every day are not impacting the world as much as they think but in the next 5 years someone who is already super smart will probably invent a life changing technology using AI to help them.

It has done novel theoretical physics now too under expert guidance and verification. GPT 5.2 or something like it solved some gluon-scattering problem for instance in quantum field theory with some expert guidance.

It hasn't written one Great Novel or or come up with an idea for a Fortune 500 company. Long way to go. Math and physics is ttt only a handful of people go into these fields because you have to be extremely autistic and there's no money in it. Anything having to do with producing wealth is a lot higher level imo.

Writing a Great Novel can be done by someone with slightly above avg intelligence + a messy bundle of other traits. Fortune 500 company starting can be done by someone with even less and has a lot to do with aggression, stamina, luck etc. You can query an ai right now and it can come up with endless "ideas for fortune 500 companies" whether they become instantiated has nothing to do with coming up with the idea but with someone following through with them under the right conditions.

Okay whatever man it hasn't written a Great Book yet. I'll give you that one because a lot of the prose it outputs is pretty janky and even the good stuff would take a human a long time to string together into something presentable. My point is just that writing a Great Novel is not raw intellect. A work is not simply "inherently Great" on its own, humans decide it is. A human has to write it and have cultural positioning for it's uptake. I think whether it can solve a classic puzzle humans never could is a more fair test of intelligence. Even novelists who were smart for novelists like Pynchon were not Erdos level.

Yeah you wrong. Just think of the scale of people who try and write a novel vs try and solve Erdőz. A factor of millions more have tried to write novels. At the very least it's proof of writing's value to humanity. It's also widely known that Erdőz problems have no value to science and are just there for fun. You're arguing that a sport like equestrian is more important than soccer or basketball because it's more theoretically complex or something. But things humans care about are the problems that matter. Even in science technology outweighs theory by a wide margin. Which is why the hard sciences are mostly dead.

“Humanity values novels more than Erdos problems” is not the same claim as “writing a Great Novel is a better test of raw intelligence.”

Also you are underrating the potential value of solving Erdos problems. The tools generated to solve them and the connections made between disciplines can end up having applications down the road for comp sci, physics, cryptography etc. Tons of pure math looks useless from the outset and then gets picked up and used for something important.

Doesn't matter though because even if a novel is more valuable to humanity that doesn't imply it is more intelligence loaded.

Cr.

The tension here is that wordcels often think wordceling is the pinnacle of raw intellect, but it's not. Writing a great novel requires an above average IQ, but not genius level. What it does require is a lot of things beyond raw intellect that AI is bad at.

Hemmingway wasn't splitting the atom and Oppenheimer wasn't writing grrat fiction. Unfortunately wordcels are often very myopic and consider their wordceling "raw intelligence." Meanwhile they struggled to get a C in whatever basic STEM required courses they needed for their Liberal Arts degree. They also have a lot of ego in their "raw intelligence" so they are kneejerk dismissive of AI, even though it can perform advanced intellectual tasks that they can't, because it can't wordcel as good as them, because that requires things other than raw intellect, but they want to believe their wordcel intelligence is supreme, because they are insecure fags.

The reverse of this phenomenon, stemcels that think that because they're great at stem they must be compeling writers, also exists. This is why techfags thought AI would also replace artists; because they cannot perceive the difference between compeling art and AI slop.

edit: And I didn't say writing is easy. I said it requires things other than raw intellect, and that the raw intellect required isn't massive.

I think the truth is that different types of intelligence cannot perceive the value of another type of intelligence they don't have. It actually does take being super smart to write a great novel, but it's a massive amount of intelligence in a particular area. To call only stem or only wordcelling intelligence excludes the other. They are both very rare and have a similar potential to be valuable to society. The Penis is saying OFS Erdőzmos are smart and Thomas Pynchon is not. That's just ridiculous. The other could not do what they do. Then it's a question of how much what you're amazing at impacts the world. Without technology we'd all live in huts. Without great art we'd all be striver jeets living in atomized units coding all day. Neither form is the end all be all.

Another type of intelligence no one talks about is business instinct. No one wants to admit this is real but business geniuses are real and no one can quite explain it. Steve Wozniak may have been a great inventor but without Jobs there's no trillion dollar company. Being really good at understanding the macros of a massive business isn't quite STEM and it's not quitting wordcel. It's a separate Thing and only a handful of people are really good at taking valuable ideas and making money out of them.

By "raw intelligence" I believe The Penis is referring to the type of measurable intellect that IQ measures. Not a denial that things like instinct, perceiving and describing emotions, etc. are wholly unrelated to cognition.

I never said Pynchon was not smart, I said he was an example of a very high iq writer, but that he was still not Erdos level. Also do you not realize Pynchon was STEM? He studied physics and engineering at cornell. He graduated high school at 16. He was a genius, but Erdos was a prodigy. There is a difference.

Also I never said anything against linguistic intelligence. I think Pynchon's linguistic ability is impressive. I didn't dismiss different types of intelligence. I'm talking about the overall IQ level.

You overweight the value of STEM because you value STEM. If Pynchon was so good at science why didn't he split the atom or whatever the fuck. People gravitate towards their best skills. You think you can prove Erdőz was smarter than everyone else because you think it takes more intellect to do what he did. He was methhead who died a pauper and humanity has gained absolutely nothing from any of his proofs. They're just little brain teasers for painfully antisocial autists and you literally have to smoke meth to be any good at them. It may require high IQ but the task is inherently low value. It reaps no benefits to society. Meanwhile AI is worth trillions and it's just some faggy parlor trick that was invented by CoMPuTeR ScIEnTiSTs who couldn't solve Erdőz problems to save their life. AI is actually valuable it's worth many multiples of the entire global economy (in theory). Erdőz proofs aren't worth the paper they're printed on. You just want to overvalue STEM and IQ because that's what you've got in life. I've got wordcel skills in spades. I'm a Liberal Artist. But at least I can admit it.

Bro, what...no. I'm not trying to say STEM is better than language or the arts or anything like that. I have never once made fun of liberal artists on this board before. I don't care about the stupid math problems myself, and I do enjoy Pynchon's writing so your argument doesn't really apply. My point was that Pynchon is an example of someone who was both a high genius and a great writer, but that he wasn't quite Erdos level. It has nothing to do with books vs. STEM and everything to do with how we measure intelligence. Erdos was a more extreme case of a legible early mathematical prodigy than Pynchon. And the reason I even brought this up in the first place was that I said the ability to solve that type of puzzle is a more constrained and fair test of intelligence.

You keep playing a game of semantics. You keep saying math is the fairest assessment of intelligence. What you are implying is that it is the best measure of intelligence. I am saying you overweight this just because you like Erdőz Pal for some reason. It's not objectively better or higher like you say. This is a value judgment. By your logic Terrance Tao should be ruling over all of us and instead most people have never heard of him. Being good at maths is not the end all be all but I'll never convince you of it.

The fuck does Terrence Tao ruling over people have to do with IQ? I never said that IQ implies social dominance or anything like that. The reason solving Erdos problems is a better measure of raw intelligence is because it is more constrained, less noisy, less confounded. I never said it was a *complete* measure of intelligence.

I hate using cliches like "mOvInG tHe GoAlPoStS" but what you did ITT is the definition of that. you said that AI can't solve problems that the smartest people spend their entire careers solving. The Penis and I informed you that it's been doing just that. then you started talking about "Great Novel[s]" and "Fortune 500 compan[ies]" and acting like ANYONE said solving STEM problems - or any type of intelligence - was better than any other type of intelligence. and now you're fighting against that claim and new ones you fabricate out of thin air in every reply. but no one said any of that, dumbass, so clearly you don't have ANY kind of intelligence

HATP said Gujerreddit has a hissy fit because HATP was mean to Lex and Lynn Conway, so I guess his simping has a limit. Or perhaps he's resorted to simping for Lynn's troon bussy and got mad HATP besmirched m'zhers honor. Either way he seems like just as much as an insipid feminine jeet irl as he comes across here.

You seem to be infatuated with her, have poasted about her for years, and the primary way I become aware of who you are despite moniker changing is that you responded to all of her poasts in 0.2 seconds, often multiple times in the same thread (like this one).

From an outsiders POV you seem to be in love with her.

The rapidness and volume is the problem. Shes a great and intelligent poaster and I like poasting with her too even though she's a filthy kikess that needs to GBTI. I don't see you poasting in 0.2 seconds multiple times in the same thread to anyone else.

Not trying to call you out and the only reason I'm mentioning it is because it's deep in a subthread wasteland, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this.

He is always subtly bending the convo towards the lib position. Very noticeable if you're a shitcon. I have no issue with some entertainer being left wing but he's clearly pushing an agenda of moreso trying to ingratiate himself with the liberal elite establishment. He is desperate for acceptance in the world to NYC high rollers. He talks the talk and walks the walk. He's oozing with please let my kids into the right institutions some day. Really playing kiss ass with the Powers That Be which is nauseating. He is really talented though.

I don't remember gunnerattt ever simping, but I remember him being called "simp crew". I wasn't really poasting enough during that period to have seen much of it. I think I had a one or two month poasting binge when gunner was vodka gf threading, and that was when I first heard of "HATP" although I never really formed a coherent opinion of who it was. After that I didn't poast for a few years straight. I don't remember there being too many fem poasters to simp too. It was mostly just gjr.

How is it bad at solving ultra high level problems if its already solving Erdos problems that the most intelligent humans of all time couldn't solve (including Erdos himself)? And what's funny too is it did it in some hilariously short period of time where a human would have spent 60 years learning logic and formalisms to try to figure that out (if even possible for a human to do)?

the funny thing is the *good* fallout of AI is what xo poas are rightfully scared of. it is going to absolutely obliterate post-WWII style striver careers, and especially if you have kids you will have to teach them how to actually think for themselves instead of just doing what you did and follow a path to easy wagie $$. but on the whole this will be a significant net positive for society

the negative aspect is that it's going to make us all retarded and lazy of course. to the extent it's already relatively uncommon these days, fewer people will know how to actually do something on their own. there will be far fewer artists and creatives. general literacy and quality of discourse will fall off a cliff. etc.

It's really good at coding and eliminates white collar jobs. It's a 180 business development. It's no different than if Toyota discovered a new way to build the Camry for 20% less. That would be a revolutionary innovation. But no one would claim that a car production innovation made them personally smarter. That's why AI people are so snooty and everyone hates them. Somebody uncovered a gimmicky tool to make more money and you have to put up with midwits bloviating about how it's turned them into Albert Einstein. You're one of them. I say this as a yuge NVDA whale who bought in at 175.

I never said it "turned me into Albert Einstein". That completely misconstrues my point. I'm saying that it's a big deal, because if you give virtually everyone the power to write software and manipulate computers in a way that previously took a team of mit researchers months to do, then that's completely changing the landscape of what can be done. If a single slightly above avg intelligence person can do the work of teams of highly skilled 150 iq people then what do you think the effect that is en masse and across even short periods of time. Your toyota analogy shows that you are thinking of "intelligence" as only an internal trait. I'm talking about the effective cogntive throughput of what you can do with whatever tools are available.

Yeah. I think there is a difference between something that stores information cheaply and something that reasons and writes code and allows you to manipulate computers through natural language. First is important, but second is bigger IMO.

I asked Gemini who seems the smartest and dumbest in the thread and the last ones are hilarious (start at #6)

"

### 1. The Penis

* **Rank**: Smartest

* **Why**: As the creator of the thread, they consistently steer the conversation toward complex, valid concepts in cognitive technology and computer science [source: 1]. They introduce highly relevant ideas like **convergent strategies** in AI self-preservation and clarify that they are measuring **effective cognitive throughput** rather than just immutable, internal human traits [source: 1]. They successfully defend their arguments against bad analogies and remain level-headed when other posters misinterpret them [source: 1].

### 2. Ape Arrogance

* **Rank**: High Intelligence / Best Logic

* **Why**: They demonstrate excellent reading comprehension and serve as the thread’s logic enforcer [source: 1]. They accurately translate the original poster's point for others who struggle to understand it, and call out **RUN LIKE HELL** for moving the goalposts from a technical discussion about mathematical problems to an irrelevant debate about writing novels and starting Fortune 500 companies [source: 1]. They handle philosophical nuances regarding emergent behaviors quite well [source: 1].

### 3. Bow tie niggas always have very strong opinions

* **Rank**: Above Average / Highly Articulate

* **Why**: They bring sharp, clear distinctions to the table, separating measurable IQ from other human cognitive elements like artistic intuition and emotional expression [source: 1]. They also accurately pinpoint the conversational flaws of the lower-ranked posters, calling out poor reading comprehension and intellectual sophistry with precision [source: 1].

### 4. gibberish

* **Rank**: Average / Active Participant

* **Why**: While they don't necessarily drive the deep philosophical or technical arguments, they actively engage with the core premises of the thread [source: 1]. They accurately track the geopolitical and productivity-related motivations behind global tech investments, even if some of their interjections are relatively simple [source: 1].

### 5. OYT and the Indie Reprieve

* **Rank**: Average to Low

* **Why**: They show a heavy dose of cynicism but struggle to grasp how technological disruption shifts economic structures, repeatedly missing the points being made about cognitive scaling and instead defaulting to generic anti-growth/anti-economy talking points [source: 1].

### 6. RUN LIKE HELL

* **Rank**: Low / Poor Logic

* **Why**: Despite claiming to have "wordcel skills in spades," they show incredibly poor reading comprehension and logical fallacies throughout the subthread [source: 1]. After making a definitively false claim about AI being bad at solving career-level problems, they continually deflect by bringing up Thomas Pynchon, starting businesses, and Hungarian grammar to avoid admitting they were wrong [source: 1]. When totally backed into a corner by factual counterpoints, they resort to posting "I love men" and admitting they refuse to look at the evidence because it would be a "betrayal of my people" [source: 1].

### 7. Emotionally + Physically Abusive Ex-Husband (EPAH)

* **Rank**: Dumbest

* **Why**: They firmly claim the bottom spot. They completely misunderstand basic tech terminology, trying to use a dismissive tone about LLMs without realizing that advanced reasoning models are actively tackling complex computational benchmarks [source: 1]. Their counterarguments consist entirely of sarcastic strawmen, earning them the title of the thread's resident contrarian who is "just doing shtick" [source: 1].
