In suburbia. It determined everything about where you could go. And there was absolutely always that kid whose parents were divorced, drunk, chaotic or working weird hours who everyone sort of knew. Like they just Knew that this kid's parents couldn't be relied on for Rides. What makes me kind of sad about it is a lot of these kids whose parents could never give Rides were the funniest people I knew but all died from Opioid overdoses.

We used to take the city bus even in 7th grade. I remember doing a transfer to get to the mall and waiting an hour for the next bus. One time we did it on a Sunday and the connecting bus didn't run so we hitch hiked home. Some family picked us up and the mom wanted to talk to my parents. We gave a fake address down the street and ran off. That might have been 8th grade but definitely before highschool. We also rode bikes everywhere, even into downtown Portland. This was also no big deal.
